What is Acai Fruit Juice? |
||||||||||
Acai fruit juice is the juice derived from the acai berry. The berry stems from Central and South America, particularly in the countries of Belize, Brazil and Peru. Acai grows best in the swamplands of the region, most notable in areas that are subject to flooding. Since they are fast growing and easily cultivated, the local population uses them for a variety of purposes, but most commonly for the juice. In order to extract the juice, great care must be taken. Acai, like a pomegranate, contains a pit that must be discarded during the juicing process. Traditionally, this is done through a process in which the fruit is put in a large press and the juice flows as the berry is crushed. The industrial process uses a method very similar to this or grinds the berry whole. A number of companies have adopted acai fruit juice as a supplemental addition to many traditional juices or on its own. Many of these companies tout the health benefits of the berry in advertising and marketing. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the only benefits derived from the fruit juice is its base nutritional value as well as certain antioxidant potential. Local residents of the Amazon rain forest have used acai fruit juice for centuries and claim that it provides a number of healthy features. Certain traditional medicines incorporate the juice and a variety of tribal residents perform ceremonies with the liquid. One of the most famous promoters of acai fruit juice is the national Brazilian soccer team. The team drinks the juice both before and during games. In the commercial market, some of the health benefits of acai fruit juice are cited by a variety of researchers. It is said to have similar benefits of wine with none of side effects of alcohol use. The juice has been shown to help control weight and reduce the levels of cholesterol. Many scientists point to the fact that acai contains high levels of both omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. Acai berry juice has also been shown in clinical trials to provide cancer-fighting agents and help with the aging process. Although the FDA has not approved acai fruit juice for combating most of these conditions, research trials continue to show results. Compared to other fruits, acai is at least as healthy as strawberries, mangoes and grapes. It provides substantial amounts of vitamin A and a reasonable source of iron, protein and calcium.
