What is Acai Berry Drink? |
||||||||||
An acai berry drink is a beverage made from the juice of acai berries. The drink may be made of 100% acai juice, or it may be a mixture of acai berry juice and other fruit juices. Many people consume acai berries for their nutritional benefits. The berries are harvested from acai palm trees in Central and South America. An acai berry drink made with 100% acai juice has a thick consistency, similar to a thick orange juice. Even without any sugar added, the juice has a naturally sweet taste that is different from most other juices, and may take a little getting used to. For the best nutritional benefits, most manufacturers recommend drinking the equivalent of a shot glass of pure acai berry juice. If the juice is mixed with other fruit juices, a full juice glass is a good amount. There are many purported health benefits of the acai berry, but keep in mind that many of the claims have not been validated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Acai berry drinks are very high in disease-preventing antioxidants, and are often referred to as one of the nutritionally perfect "superfoods." The antioxidant levels in acai berries are higher than in some other berries that contain high levels of antioxidants, such as blueberries. These high levels of antioxidants might prevent heart diseases such as high cholesterol, improve the skin's appearance, and help to prevent cancer. Drinking an acai berry drink might also be part of a weight-loss program. Though it is not harmful to include acai berry fruit juice as part of a healthy diet, there is no conclusive evidence that suggests acai berry contributes to weight-loss. Some of the weight-loss products that contain acai concentrate are very expensive, and it may be unnecessary. Including an acai berry drink as part of an otherwise healthy diet, and a lifestyle that includes exercise, is unlikely to do harm, and may even help to further improve one's health. An acai berry drink is usually more expensive than orange juice or other fruit juices, depending upon where one lives, and the concentration level of acai berry in the juice. Since it is generally consumed in small amounts at a time, however, the juice is not as expensive as it seems.
