What is Açai Juice? |
||||||||
Açai juice is juice which has been pressed from the açai berry, a drupe which has been cultivated and consumed in Brazil and other parts of South America for centuries. In the late 20th century, açai juice became a popular product among people with health concerns, because the berries contain a number of useful vitamins and minerals, and they appear to have a high concentration of antioxidants, compounds which are believed to be beneficial to human health. The juice can be found at health food stores and large markets, and it may also be offered at smoothie shops. The açai palm is native to Brazil, where the broad-leafed trees reach heights of up to 100 feet (roughly 30 meters). The berries, which are technically drupes, grow in clusters which look rather like grapes; the resemblance to grapes is furthered by the fact that the berries are around grape sized and dark purple. Like other drupes, açai berries have a seed surrounded by a thick, fleshy outer layer; this outer layer is the part of the berry which yields the useful juice. Research on the dietary habits of Native Americans in the region suggest that the açai berry has been an important part of their diet for centuries. The nutrient rich berries are packed with fiber, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and an assortment of other minerals such as calcium, making them a valuable supplement to a varied diet. When European colonists were introduced to the food, they also adopted it, and various açai products are a common offering on the Brazilian table, especially at breakfast. The açai berries themselves do not hold up well once they have been picked. As a result, companies which wish to export them to other countries must either freeze dry them or press them into pulp and juice. When consumers began clamoring for “superfoods” with high concentrations of antioxidants, açai juice experienced a surge of popularity among consumers, and it began to be blended into a wide assortment of products which are marketed to health-conscious consumers. The decision to add açai juice to your diet is certainly not a bad one. The juice is indeed rich in useful compounds which can improve your health, and açai juice is generally harvested sustainably. However, you should probably resist the temptation to think of açai juice is a magic bullet; while it is probably beneficial to your health, so is exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and consuming a wide variety of foods.
