A water treadmill is a fitness machine used underwater. Simple versions of these devices consist of a self-powered conveyor belt and a bar that the user can hold onto while he or she runs underwater. More complex treadmills can be powered and can include a water jet that creates a current for a user to run against. It is also possible for a water treadmill to have an incline so that a user can run uphill.

One thing that all water treadmills have in common is that they are used underwater. In most cases, these tools are used in water that is between waist and chest high. Deeper water makes the act of running more difficult though it places a great deal less stress on the bones and joints. Treadmills with no powered components can be used underwater without any protective casing while those with electronic parts must be specially made to be waterproof. The moving parts on an unpowered water treadmill are often coated with protective materials so that they do not deteriorate underwater.

A bar is also a necessary feature of a water treadmill. The bar attaches to the front of the treadmill and extends upwards off of it so that the user can hold onto something while running underwater. Some treadmills come with adjustable bars so that they can be raised or lowered to match the user's height.

Many water treadmills are made with an incline. An incline makes the back of the treadmill lower than the front, making it possible to run uphill on the treadmill. Some treadmills may come with adjustable inclines.

More high-tech treadmills may also come with additional features. A jet attached to the front of the machine can create a current, making it more strenuous to run on the treadmill. A camera can also be mounted on the device so that users can see what they look like when they are running. This allows them to adjust their movements to make better use of the device.

There are many reasons to use a water treadmill. Working out in the water has a number of benefits, including increased resistance to movements and decreased pressure on the joints. Many people who are unable to work out on the land may be able to exercise efficiently underwater. Athletes who wish to condition certain muscles can also benefit from the use of these devices.
