While the transceiver module is a common piece of electronic equipment used on a regular basis by people around the world, most are not aware they are using it, let alone what it is. The device contains a receiver and transmitter that allow for sending and receiving information. Without a transceiver module, communication by wireless means would be virtually impossible, which would be both inconvenient and dangerous — inconvenient because people of the modern world have become accustomed to constant connection between friends, family, and work, and dangerous because someone in an emergency situation may not be able to call for help quickly.

Common types of transceiver modules include cell phones and radios. Outgoing and incoming calls have been the primary modes of transmission and reception with cell phones, but as technology has advanced, they have also been rendered capable of sending and receiving other types of information, like text messages and Internet data. Radio transceiver modules include two-way radios and avalanche transceivers, also called beacons. Two-way radios lack the more complex functions of cell phones, but they are especially useful when distributed among out-of-office team members working for a particular business. Avalanche transceivers are radios that send out emergency signals that can be intercepted and traced by someone who has his own device.

Choosing and buying a transceiver module is as simple as someone identifying his or her personal needs and setting a budget. As far as cell phones go, prices may range from around $100 or less for a basic model to upwards of several hundred dollars depending on the applications included. An individual interested in purchasing a cell phone should decide if he or she wants Internet access, the ability to text message, and a host of other applications that come with different models and makes. If a curious buyer is looking into two-way radios, he must think about cost and choose a module that is mounted upon a desk if he works in an office, in a car if he does a good deal of his work on the road, or held by hand if he works in the field. Shoppers attempting to pick out the appropriate avalanche transceiver will have to make a choice between an analog type, which sends out a sound signal, and a digital type, which uses a light panel to lead searchers to the source of the avalanche transceiver module.

Whether it is a cell phone, a two-way radio, or an avalanche transceiver module, potential customers should be aware that these means of communication do not come cheap. It will probably cost several hundred dollars to purchase one of these devices unless it is a cell phone with only the most basic features. Any of these can be bought at an electronics store featuring a broad selection.
