A technology coordinator is the coordinator or assistant for a technology firm, or technology department within a larger organization. He or she does not typically manage or oversee staff, and usually reports directly to the director of technology. As with other coordinator positions, such as events coordinator, marketing coordinator, or administrative coordinator, a technology coordinator role entails a broad range of responsibilities. The main functions of the position usually include research, event/conference coordination, correspondence with colleagues, clients and suppliers, and assessing new technologies.

Of all skills required in a technology coordinator role, strong communication skills are typically the most important. Because of this emphasis on communication, an individual with strong communication skills and basic technology skills would likely be considered a better candidate compared to someone who may have strong technology skills, but is lacking in communication skills. Although this type of position could act as an entry-level stepping stone into the tech field for a recent technology graduate, it is most often a role better suited for individuals who have strong coordinating and communication skills foremost.

Individuals who are interested in becoming a technology coordinator should be prepared for the broad range of tasks that usually fall under the technology and coordination umbrella. If an applicant prefers jobs with a straightforward routine and minimal surprises, he or she should read the job description carefully, and be wary of the phrase “other tasks as required” under the listing of job responsibilities. This is a caveat of many contemporary coordinator positions, and calls for a flexible person who is willing to be a jack-of-all-trades.

The average workday of a technology coordinator might include such responsibilities as coordinating a time for the systems administrator to set up staff computers with passwords, coordinating travel to a technology conference or event, and fielding inquiries about the technology department or firm. A technology coordinator will also likely be the one to assess the department or firm’s technology needs and meet with suppliers. He or she then assesses the cost and benefits of the product or service and takes the recommendations to the director, technology.
