A screw extractor is a tool used to remove broken or damaged screws, bits, and bolts. When the head of the screw breaks off or gets too damaged to use, the screw can be very difficult to remove from an object. The tip of the screw extractor tapers to a sharp point, while the bod is threaded like a screw. Another type of screw extractor resembles a hollow cylinder with saw-cut teeth along one end. These devices fit onto a standard drill. Users should center the tool around the broken screw, then turn the drill on as if screwing in a regular screw. This causes the extractor to bore out the material around the damaged screw, removing both the wood and broken fastener. The wood can then be plugged or patched so that work can continue on the project.

When I ran into the same sort of trouble you had I followed the video's instructions until I felt comfortable enough to try again. It really worked and once you have a good pilot hole the extraction is really easy. I say give it another shot once you have watched it be done a few times.
I recently picked up a screw extractor set to deal with a broken screw in the cabinet I am working on and I am having a heck of a time trying to get the smallest screw extractor to do its job. I find that when I went to make the initial pilot hole that I couldn't seem to get a good size match and now I think the prepared area is off.
Does anyone have any tips for how to properly prepare a screw for extraction? Is there anything I can do if I have already wrecked the screw head?
