What is a Rock Climbing Wall?

Instead of starting out hanging from a thousand foot high cliff, many beginner rock climbers commence their training on a rock climbing wall. These walls are specially manufactured and can be found at rock climbing gyms and even at certain ride and amusement parks. Whether you use a rock climbing wall for training or simply for plain fun, there are a few things you should know.

Rock climbing walls are specially built to provide adequate hand and foot holds. Without rocks and crevices to grab and hold onto, a rock climber would have no way to advance up the mountain.

Rock climbing is a full body workout. Not only is the sport fun, but it will get you into great shape. However, the sport may prove to be on the expensive side. Most rock climbing gyms charge per hour to use their rock climbing wall, and you must rent the necessary equipment. If you opt to buy your own equipment you may save in the long run but gear isn't cheap. If just starting out, try going to a rock climbing gym to learn the basics.

The majority of the learning curve involved in using a rock climbing wall is in experience. Of course, you will need someone to spot you on each of your climbs to assure that your safety rope is secure. After learning the basics you will progress to learn new techniques and styles of climbing.

Keep in mind that different rock climbing walls vary in difficulty. When going to a gym you are offered a wider variety of difficulties, as opposed to going to a small single rock climbing wall at a theme park. This allows the climber to start out easy and get the hang of the sport, challenging himself as he progresses with experience.

Overall, a rock climbing wall is a great way to exercise, a great sport to immerse yourself in, and possibly just a great way to have fun on a Saturday morning. Regardless of your level of commitment, give climbing a try and see for yourself.
