My friend has a very common name, and it has actually cost him a job opportunity before. He was denied the position because of confusion with someone else in the city of phoenix with the same name. It took him a couple of months to prove it to the company that he was not the person in question, but by that time the company had already hired someone else. They offered him a lesser position, but he said that the hiring manager was still a little standoffish and did not make him feel welcome.
What can people do in a situation like this? Did the company handle this the right way, or should more have been done. These are the types of reasons that I don't believe every position should depend on a criminal background check. I think more weight should be placed on a person’s personal references, but that would mean hiring managers would actually have to call the persons references.
