@Terrificli -- if you would have stuck with it longer, perhaps the vacuum would have worked for you. These things take time, after all.
Washing the dog works for controlling fur, but you can't wash them too often (weekly is pushing it, in fact) because you can dry out their skin. You can also dry out their skin by using "human" shampoo instead of stuff made for dogs.
Of course, if a pet vacuum doesn't work and you don't want to deal with all of that washing, groomers can help. They know how to groom a dog so that it won't be scared and generally have quieter tools for vacuuming pet fur.
