A laundry sink cabinet is a storage cabinet that can hold a working sink. A laundry room may feature this type of unit to facilitate items which require additional care during the washing process. These cabinets are available for purchase in standard sizes, which requires a countertop material be used and adjusted to fit the chosen utility sink. Do it yourself homeowners who prefer not to install this type of feature using a countertop can use a pre-made kit that provides both a cabinet and sink of similar sizing and requires very little, if any, adjusting.
The standard size for a laundry sink cabinet base is 36 inches (approximately 91 centimeters). This type of cabinetry may be purchased in the kitchen cabinetry section of most local home improvement stores and through Internet ordering. It includes two side opening panel doors and two non-functioning pull out drawer fronts. The back may be entirely hollow to allow for the easy passage of plumbing pipes, or it may provide a half panel opening.
Laundry tubs range in size from 17 to 25 inches (43 to 63.5 centimeters) and may be constructed of stainless steel or porcelain. A countertop may be cut to fit the correct sizing of the tub and attached to the laundry sink cabinet using long screws. The drop of the basin is generally much greater than that of a kitchen sink. This provides more room for the washing and ringing out of multiple pieces of clothing. As a result, the drawer pulls on the front side of the cabinet must remain fastened shut and the bottom of the basin itself may be slightly visible when the side opening doors are open.
Home improvement stores and websites frequently offer a variety of pre-assembled kits for a laundry sink cabinet. This type of kit will typically provide the necessary cabinetry, sink, faucet, and plumbing attachment hardware to complete the project. The base cabinet is constructed in such a way that the home owner or professional installer can gently drop the sink into the top opening without needing to adjust the size of the opening or fit any additional countertop materials around the basin. Some kits may feature a movable freestanding cabinet on wheels with a sink unit already attached. These kits require only that they be hooked into the main water supply of the house to function properly and need very little installation.
