A friend of mine had this done because she had a septated hymen, and periods were a real pain for her. She also said it didn't take that long, and the recovery wasn't bad at all. She said her periods were much easier to deal with after that, too.
I know it's a symbol of virginity, but I don't know that doing a hymenotomy on every newborn girl isn't a bad idea, assuming that could be done. It would make things easier for her when she gets older, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't agree with me.
