A high wheel cultivator is a lawn and garden tool with a simple design. A wheel, normally 24 inches (61 cm) in diameter, is connected to two long handles which are used to direct the tool. A plow stem descends from the handles, providing a means to attach accessories.

There are various accessories that can be attached to the plow stem, such as a furrow plow or a 5-tine cultivator. Switching between accessories is normally easily. All that is usually required is a wrench to remove a bolt or two.

Success with a high wheel cultivator usually depends on the types of jobs that users expect it to perform. It also depends on the model that is purchased. In many cases, a high wheel cultivator will not work well as a cheap alternative for a tiller.

The removal of weeds is often a primary motive for using this tool. This tends to be a prime selling point for high wheel cultivators. When the tool is used for this purpose, accessories that act like rakes usually gather up weeds as the cultivator is pushed along.

For planting, a high wheel cultivator can be a real garden pal. It can be very effective in creating a furrow for seeds. A plow accessory can usually be used for this. Then, a turn shovel implement can be used to return the dirt to the furrow. This often leaves an irrigation trench, which is something that many users appreciate.

One disadvantage of the high wheel cultivator is that it has limited digging depth. With a hoe or a shovel, gardeners can dig to their depth of choice. With the high wheel cultivator, users can usually only adjust the depth by how straight up they hold the handles. There is not usually any further options that allow the user to increase the soil penetration.

The high wheel cultivator appeals to users for different reasons. Some appreciate that the simple design makes it easy to use and repair. In comparison to motorized tools, it is usually considered to be safer and more environmentally friendly. When compared to hand tools, it is often considered to be more pleasant to use, since it is mobile and does not require bending to the ground.

Some of the tasks that a high wheel cultivator is commonly employed for may be better performed with a low wheel cultivator. These are different tools. A low wheel cultivator is not a high wheel cultivator that has been adjusted or whose large wheel has been exchanged for a smaller one.
