What is a Hair Mask? |
||||||||||
Just as a facial mask can help correct imbalances in your complexion, a hair mask can work to keep your tresses in top shape. Although hair masks are a common treatment at luxury spas around the world, you don’t have to be rich to enjoy this pampering beauty ritual. There are a number of hair masks that you can make at home using ingredients that are inexpensive and readily available. The process of making your own hair mask is fairly simple, although you’ll probably want to save the treatment for a time when you plan to spend the entire evening at home. Some of the ingredients used in do-it-yourself hair masks can have a distinctive odor which may require two or three shampoos to remove completely. To make a “fruit smoothie” mask that works well as a conditioner for all hair types, combine 1/2 banana, 1/4 cantaloupe, 1/4 avocado, one tablespoon yogurt, and one tablespoon wheat germ oil in a blender. Massage the mixture into your scalp and wait at least 15 minutes before shampooing. If your hair is very dry, you can make a hair mask by mixing two whole eggs with four tablespoons of olive oil. Apply the mixture throughout your hair, then cover your scalp with plastic wrap. Wait 10 to 15 minutes, remove the plastic, and shampoo as usual. Damaged hair is a very common concern for women who have their hair colored or highlighted and frequently use curling irons or blow dryers as part of their styling routine. If you have damaged hair, you can make a hair mask by combining a very ripe banana with a few drops of almond oil. Add this mixture to your hair for approximately 15 minutes. Rinse with soda water, then shampoo as usual. Naturally curly hair is gorgeous, but frizzy hair can be quite problematic. To keep frizziness under control, mix one tablespoon of honey with one liter of clean water. Apply the mixture to your hair after using your normal shampoo. Regardless of what type of hair mask you choose to create, remember that most masks are only intended to be used once or twice per month. They are intended to help repair your hair, not simply maintain your style. Using a hair mask too often may create additional problems, such as excess oiliness from overuse of a moisturizing mask.
