What is a Computer Stand?

A computer stand is a small table or cart that is used as a flat surface for a computer. Stands offer a smaller space to use a computer on than a traditional computer desks. A computer stand comes in a variety of materials such as, wood, metal or plastic. These materials are durable, and they can be made to fit in with any décor.

One of the most convenient and simple types of computer stands is the platform stand. This computer stand is a way to store computers or laptops when the available area is limited, or a person has more than one computer. Platform computer stands usually come equipped with wheels for mobility.

In general, a computer stand allows for the easy removal and adjustment of cords and connections, and it makes cleaning underneath the computer effortless. Computer stands also protect the computer from a wet floor or flood by keeping it on a platform and off the floor. A computer stand also alleviates the need for moving heavy equipment from one place to another. Computer and monitor stands provide a workstation, while dolly-style stands protect and store only the computer.

Laptop or notebook stands are smaller styles of a computer stand. These are titled platforms that are designed to maintain the convenience of a laptop while providing a surface that will keep the machine cool. Laptop stands come in very simple, durable plastic designs, or with cooling fans to keep the laptop working at maximum efficiency. They are small and portable, easily taken from place to place.

For larger computers, many people choose a shelf computer stand. These computer stands have a similar design and offer many of the same features as traditional computer desks, but their smaller size keeps the equipment in a compact area. A shelf computer stand can often be used to store a computer in a small corner of a room. The shelf stand has a space for the computer, monitor and keyboard, which slides in and out of position. Empty space surrounds the shelves, making plugging in and attaching cords simple.

Regardless of the type or style of a computer stand, it is usually adjustable. Adjustable height computer stands offer several inches of adjustment for the workstation. Along with the slide-out keyboard, surface for the monitor, and shelf for the computer, there is also room for a printer. Some stands come with a cabinet section for easy storage of files.

Computer stands are often referred to as CPU stands. The CPU, or central processing unit, refers to the actual processor itself inside the computer, but is a term often used loosely to describe the entire computer box. Low to the floor, it stands on wheels and is able to support generally up to 50 pounds. It can be maneuvered and adjusted for easier access when working on the computer.
