What is a Blackjack Table?

define

A Blackjack table is a specially designed table created for the casino card game called Blackjack, also commonly known as "21." The table is typically semi-circular in shape, with or without a dugout on one side for the standing dealer. The average Blackjack table is approximately 6 feet (183 cm) long, 4 feet (122 cm) wide from player to dealer side, and around 3 feet (92 cm) high.

The traditional Las Vegas-style Blackjack table is made of wood, with vinyl padding on the supports and around the edge of the table. The top of a Blackjack table is usually covered in green wool felt. The traditional shape of the table is a semi-circle with seating on one side for up to seven players. The green felt top is permanently marked, typically in yellow and white, with the following: seven circles or rectangles where each player places their bets and receives their cards, the word DISCARD near a slot built-into the table for dead cards, the word CASH near another slot where the dealer deposits cash bets, and the house rules which include the betting limits. The casino name and logo is usually emblazoned on the felt as well.

The card-dealing shoe, where cards are stored prior to being dealt, is typically to the dealer's left. Directly in front of the dealer, and usually built down into the table's surface, is the dealer's poker chip rack. Also in front of the dealer is a card-shaped spot where the dealer plays his or her own cards.

Blackjack tables can be purchased for home use, ranging in price from under $100 US Dollars to several thousand dollars for custom-built models. Many custom options are available from various manufacturers, such as the type of wood used, the color and quality of the felt, the use of leather padding instead of vinyl, and the design of the tabletop markings. Inexpensive Blackjack layouts in the form of printed tablecloths are also available at many toy stores, as well as from stores specializing in party supplies for sale or rent.
