What Does a Reporting Analyst Do?

Working as a reporting analyst is fitting for a person with extensive computer knowledge, analytical skills and interpersonal skills. Th primary role of these individuals is to create an electronic database and store large quantities of data. In general, this career requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. While a reporting analyst can work in numerous industries, his essential job duties are much the same. These include creating custom reporting software, storing data, creating reports, analyzing reports and sharing findings with various company departments.

Creating custom reporting software is an integral job duty of a reporting analyst. Since every business has its own specific needs, an individual in this position will need to create software to meet those needs and effectively store company data. For example, if he is working for a health care provider, he may construct software that stores patients' medical history. Consequently, he will usually need substantial knowledge in computer programming and data management.

Another large part of this job revolves around storing data. It's the job of a reporting analyst to input data and continually update the database. In the case of a health care provider, he might input a newly admitted patient's name and previous medical history. As the patient receives treatment and medication, he will update the patient's file. This aspect of the job requires someone with excellent organizational skills and an eye for detail.

A reporting analyst will also be required to create reports. The frequency of reporting will often vary from company to company, but could be daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly. For this practice, he may print out graphs, make posters or create presentations. If he is working for a bank, he may create financial reports that display accrued interest from bank accounts.

Along with this, it's necessary for an individual in this role to analyze reports. Since he is the expert at data management and analysis, it's usually his responsibility to determine exactly what reports mean and draw conclusions. Consequently, a reporting analyst is required to factor in all data and be able to spot patterns and trends. This practice is essential for helping a company improve its operations.

In addition, a reporting analyst will often need to share his findings with various company departments. For example, he might lead a meeting where he gives a presentation on his most recent findings and answers questions. Being successful at this requires a person with sound communication skills and the ability to build rapport with others.
