A deputy project manager is a person who reports to a project manager and oversees each phase of a project from beginning to end. Essentially, it's his job to ensure that all tasks are completed correctly, on time and within budget. Some qualities an individual should possess are leadership skills, time management and organization. While a college degree isn't always necessary, it's helpful for obtaining a position in this field. Common responsibilities of the position include communicating with a project manager, managing staff members, monitoring the budget, solving any issues that occur and attending meetings.
Throughout the duration of a project, an individual will usually have frequent communication with a project manager. Maintaining open communication is often critical for keeping everyone on the same page and assuring that a project is completed on time. For example, these individuals may discuss weekly deadlines and what the budget is. Afterward, a deputy project manager will often relay that information to other subordinates.
Another large part of this job involves managing staff members. In most cases, the deputy project manager is responsible for creating employee schedules, giving assignments and helping when needed. On top of this, it's often up to him to evaluate each employee's performance and provide appropriate feedback. If a staff member isn't following orders or performing the job adequately, that manager will usually report it to the main project manager. Consequently, this position requires someone with good interpersonal and leadership skills.
For most projects, an individual will also need to monitor the budget regularly. Throughout each stage, a deputy project manager must keep track of money spent and how much more money is required to complete a project. If a project is exceeding budget, he may need to implement changes to stay on target. To be effective at this task, it's often necessary for him to have considerable mathematical abilities and be able to think ahead.
Along with this, a deputy project manager is often responsible for solving any issues that occur. This may include problems with scheduling, employee output, project goals or budget. When an unforeseen complication arises, he must efficiently handle it and make the necessary adjustments. Consequently, it's helpful to have improvisational skills and the ability to make quick decisions for this career.
Additionally, an individual will usually be required to attend company meetings. Since effective coordination is often required for successful project completion, it's necessary for for this person to meet with other staff members. In most cases, the main project manager will lead a meeting and the deputy project manager will contribute as needed.
