What Could Cause a False Positive on a Pregnancy Test?

Tricia Christensen

A pregnancy test taken at home can yield false positive results for several reasons. Even a pregnancy test performed on blood can show a false positive under certain circumstances. False positive are rare, but they do occur. Seeing a doctor soon after getting a positive pregnancy test result is always a good idea.

A home pregnancy test works by measuring Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). When a woman is pregnant, placenta produced to nourish the baby produces HCG in great volume. Normally most variants of the home pregnancy test cannot be considered accurate until taken on the date or a few days after a missed period.

Soaps and detergents can cause false positives on pregnancy tests.
Soaps and detergents can cause false positives on pregnancy tests.

One common corrupting agent to the pregnancy test is exposure to soaps or detergents. These can cause a false positive result. Thus urine collection should be done carefully to avoid such exposure. Many tests simply have one urinate directly on the stick used to give results. If one must urinate into a cup, the cup should be very clean and presumably free of any leftover soap or detergent deposits.

False positives on pregnancy tests are rare, which is why seeing a doctor soon after a positive result is a good idea.

Another frequently common reason for a false positive pregnancy test is when women are using HCG injections in order to assist in getting pregnant. This means that HCG levels may register even when a pregnancy does not exist. Normally a blood test or obstetric examination helps to determine a true pregnancy from a false one. Theoretically, a man being injected with HCG could have a positive pregnancy test, even though one would know the man was not pregnant.

A sonogram may be necessary to find definitive evidence of a fetus.

Other medications may also cause a false positive on a pregnancy test. These include anti-convulsants, medications to treat Parkinson’s disease, certain tranquilizers, and certain diuretics. Many of these medications could be dangerous to a growing unborn child, so it is very important to confirm results with an obstetrician if you are taking any of these medications.

The use of some medications can lead to seeing a false positive on a pregnancy test.

Trophoblastic tumors, which grown in a woman’s reproductive system, may also yield a false positive on a pregnancy test. These tumors can also make someone feel pregnant, causing morning sickness and swelling in the abdomen. This is because they also produce HCG. When caught early, these tumors generally can be removed and cause no further problems.

In some cases, hysterical or false pregnancy can also produce HCG that will be detectable on a home pregnancy test. As with trophoblastic tumors, a woman may manifest pregnancy symptoms that make the pregnancy seem more plausible.

In all cases, a positive pregnancy test means seeing a doctor soon to discuss obstetric care and set up a plan for medically addressing the pregnancy. If you have any of the conditions or take any medications above that might corrupt the test, this should be brought to a doctor’s attention so the pregnancy can be verified.

I had a heavy cycle, but ever since (about two weeks now) I have been experiencing slight pregnancy symptoms. I have an HPT but I'm worried about taking the test and getting a false answer. I even had brownish discharge off and on for a few days. What could this be? Has anyone experienced this before?

anon345521

@anon: Hope you get pregnant soon. God be with you sweetheart! Hopefully I am pregnant because I had three positive test. God bless all us women who are trying to get pregnant!

anon326646

My period is a few weeks late now. My last period was in early February. I do have abnormal period start dates; its always a week later than the month before. I took two tests a day apart. The first said not pregnant while the next one said positive (three days ago). I have no symptoms or signs so far, unlike my first pregnancy three years ago. I knew I was pregnant a week before my missed period.

anon325104

I tested four times and missed my period for two weeks. The results show negative but I have all the signs. What can one say about this?

anon312116

I took two dollar tests. I took one when I got home and it came out positive. I took the other one the next morning. It was a little darker but still positive and then the next day I got a digital test and it came out positive. I think I am about five or six weeks. I won't get to actually find out how far along I am until about the beginning of February because I will be close to 10 weeks. I guess they wait just in case I did get three false positives but I doubt it. Good luck everyone.

anon306972

I took two pregnancy tests at night, at different times of course, and they came out positive. I was kind of excited. I've been having symptoms of pregnancy like nausea, headaches, fatigue, loss of breath and getting dizzy easily like I'm about to pass out, more hungry than ever and wanting fast food, cramping, mood swings, and lower back pain. I missed my period in November.

I could have a urinary tract infection or something not sure. It hurts when I pee sometimes or it will burn. I would like to be pregnant, but I'm not getting my hopes up because I'm being told it could be a false positive.

anon257065

I had four positive tests and assumed I was pregnant. At the point I was 16 weeks late, I found out I was not, and had not ever been pregnant. None of the above explanations apply to me. I am in good health.

The only thing I can think of is that I read somewhere if you think you are pregnant, your brain can trick your body into producing pregnancy symptoms, which I had. Either that, or my doctor was wrong and I was pregnant for a little while.

I have also heard that if you miscarry at a few weeks along, you can still miss a period or two.

I met my partner on my ovulation day and was running a temperature and eating abnormally. On the third day I now decided to do a blood test in a lab and it tested weakly positive. That same day I confirmed in another lab and it read positive, but on the seventh day it read negative. I did it again and again it turned out negative. I am confused and also having some problems with my partner because he's assuming that am trying to play a fast one on him. Please I need some advice.

Women cannot genetically be hemophiliacs and a partial hysterectomy makes it almost impossible to conceive, depending on what was removed.

Next, yes you can have a period and negative pregnancy tests and still be pregnant. If you test too early, it will come up negative and an ectopic pregnancy may test negative because the hcg doesn't rise like it should. I personally had periods the first three months and tested negative but was pregnant all four times, but my body was slow to raise the hcg.

Also in pregnancy, it is best to use the first morning urine because it is the highest concentration of hcg. Also if you get conflicting results, you should test two weeks after a missed period or have the doctor do a quantitative blood pregnancy test. If you have a positive it is more likely to be right than a negative so go to the doctor. Even a faint positive line is a positive result.

If you test 20 times and get even one positive, it is more likely to be right. If you keep getting negatives but still have symptoms, get checked because ectopic pregnancies start off like normal pregnancies but may test negative.

@anon174040: You may have been pregnant, and then miscarried. I am *not* a doctor or medical professional, but that seems possible to me. It may be that, by the time you got to the hospital, the miscarriage had been over with long enough for your bloodwork to return to normal.

You may want to see a gynecologist to be evaluated as far as your hormone levels go and so forth, just to make sure everything is all right.

anon174040

I have a five year, old but i have a different partner and we have been trying for two years now!

This month my tummy was like a rock, my breasts very tender and hormones all over the place and i missed my period by three weeks so i took a home test. It read a big, clear positive and i just couldn't believe it, so i took three more tests and they all came back positive. I then took a clear blue digital test to see how far along i was and it came back i was about four weeks pregnant.

We were so overjoyed until three days after taking the doctors test i started bleeding (didn't feel like a normal period). I panicked and phoned the doctors and they told me to go to the hospital so i did. They took my blood, etc., which came back with slightly above normal results, but the doctors pregnancy test came back negative and i was and still am very confused.

The doctor just said that they believe it was a false reading test and that i wasn't pregnant.

Can someone please tell me if there is something wrong me or something because i fell like it is abnormal for your body to act like that if i wasn't pregnant?

anon146150

Wow just reading the comments shows there is still a lot of ignorance when it comes to pregnancy and periods! Please refer to your OB/GYN before making statements which are opinions rather than factual! It is completely possible to have a period during your pregnancy. it is not frequent, however it is possible!

i had unprotected sex the first two weeks in January, and had my period, but only for three days. usually i have it for seven days. I took a test today and got a very light and slender + sign. could this be due to my period and if so what reasons can it be that it was only three days long?

anon131305

So I am 2 1/2 weeks late. I have a son already so I know what it feels like to be pregnant. I feel pregnant and I have morning sickness and what not.

The thing that I'm wondering is I have taken nine pregnancy tests because I think I am and three came out positive and six came out negative. I went to the doctor today and the test came up negative (Which I said it would) so they took a blood test which I won't get back for a few days.

Is there any reason why I would get three positive tests and not be pregnant that anyone knows of?

anon127532

Finally, a chemical pregnancy is a not entirely uncommon phenomenon generally associated with actively trying-to-conceive women. That's because TTC couples will be testing, on average, sooner. A chemical pregnancy is when a fertilized embryo implants briefly in the womb (long enough to produce the hormone hCG) but the pregnancy does not "take", and is followed by normal menstruation.

Hence, in such a particular situation, you can get a positive result and, several days later, find yourself quite surprised and disappointed with a series of negative results. A chemical pregnancy is not at all rare, and therefore it is one of the emotional hazards of early-detection tests.

So I've been on depo for three years. Unfortunately i was late for one of my shots in july and didn't get it until august. I didn't realize, so that this time i was having unprotected sex. two weeks ago a took a pregnancy test and it came out negative. but I'm confused. My breasts are swollen and sore, i can hardly get out of bed, I'm eating like a mad man and I'm extra moody. but according to doctors i have nothing to worry about. there is slim to no chance of me being pregnant. I took a pregnancy test yesterday that came out negative. the one i took today came out positive. Who knows if I'm really pregnant?

anon121278

i haven't had my period since august, and it is now late october. i have reasons to believe that i am pregnant even though i have taken three tests this month that came back negative: my stomach is firm, i can't sleep on it the way i used to be able to. i go to the restroom a lot more, i feel sick during the night when i am about to go to sleep. i get tired out of the blue and if i don't eat something during the day my stomach feels like it's cramping and i have never dealt with anything like the cramping feeling if i don't eat. so i have reason to know, hope, believe i am pregnant. if anyone else is going through this along with me please feel free to answer this question. thank you.

anon113012

okay I had my period on the 14th of this month and I feel like I am pregnant. I took two tests and both were negative, but I was spotting during the second test. could that have affected the results?

anon112068

You can totally have a period and be pregnant. My friend is three months and didn't find out until two months in because she kept having her period and I've known others to have a period the whole nine months.

anon106980

I have had a partial hysterectomy and have had every sign of being pregnant so i took a home test. It has shown up positive. I am worried about what to do. I don't have insurance and I am a hemophiliac so if I have a tubal pregnancy i could be in trouble.

anon99998

OK I took two at home pregnancy tests. one came up positive and one negative and I'm only 14. I have the symptoms. Does anybody know if i could be pregnant?

anon99282

I'm 50-something days late. So i decided it was time to take an at home test so i did and that one was first pee in morning and it came up positive, and then three days later, i took another one at a different time of the day and it was a different test and that came up positive also. Does this mean anything? What are the chances of it being negative?

anon98114

I'm on the birth control pill and I've been on it for three months now and I've had loads of symptoms of being pregnant. i took a home pregnancy test but it came back negative. Are home tests accurate or should i go to my doctor and get one done?

anon92813

i have been on birth control for about three months now and i have been gaining weight and have been seeing symptoms of being pregnant. i went to the doctor to take a test and it came out negative. how can i have all the symptoms but not be pregnant. I'm confused. could the birth control be making it come out negative.

anon92073

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant since 2005, so imagine my joy when I received not one, but two positive results at home. I made the doctor's appointment only to have the result there come out negative. Waiting for the results of the blood test is almost torture! I'm not on any meds, so has anyone ever heard of getting two false positives?

anon91915

Okay, so i was supposed to get my period on the seventh and here it is the 24th and still I haven't. Well, until this morning that is.

I took three tests and they all said pregnant, but then this morning i began bleeding, but it hasn't been heavy at all (don't even need a tampon).

The blood i noticed and have seen all day is dark reddish brown. I have been sick and my boobs hurt and i have been tired, along with some other pregnancy symptoms so I don't know what to think!

I know that with my first pregnancy, I didn't test positive until five months (crazy!) and never was really sick.

Someone please tell me what you think, and if you are going to respond with "go to the doctor" comments, keep them to yourself please!

I can't afford to run to the doctor for no reason (if I'm not pregnant). Thanks.

anon91751

Well, my husband and I have been trying since november of 2009 to have a little one. i am one month late for my period. I took a digital ept on may 25 and it was negative and it took a while for it to say that. then a few days ago, I took another test. This time, it took less then one minute to say positive. It still said positive for the rest of the day. I have my first appointment tomorrow. wish me luck.

anon91742

@anon16137: read the paper thing inside it. it says read it after three minutes then throw away okay? i took a pregnancy test that came out negative, but still had sickness and a period so I went to my gp. They did a wee test and it was still negative.

i fainted at work and i went to the hospital. they did a blood test and it came out positive. sometimes the test can't pick up the hormone.

I'm 13 weeks and four days and i wouldn't change it for the world.

anon90735

All right if you're in the category of: took a test, came out positive- freaked out and took another right away which was negative, I'm right there with you. The thing is you're supposed to use that first morning pee because it's the least filtered. If you're early in pregnancy your body isn't producing enough HCG to be peed out every five seconds.

Another thing: you cannot possibly have a menstrual period and be pregnant. You have your period as a result of ovulating- an egg being released, all that good stuff. If you're pregnant that released egg isn't coming out as blood because it's filled with baby. If you are pregnant and bleeding it could be due to implantation or various other reasons.

One more thing: you can make yourself sick with worry! If you're experiencing symptoms it could be because you're too stressed about or even too focused on the situation. Stay calm and don't jump to conclusions!

anon87247

It's very so very frustrating with these home tests. I've taken four epts at home all on different days, at two in the evening and two in the morning and all have come out saying positive, so my fiance and I went to the doctor and their test has come back negative.

They say that I may be in a rare group of women that don't show on their test until I am farther along because there are some women who don't produce enough HCG hormone to be read on the doctor's office or planned parenthood test.

I have to wait a few more weeks to have them do another test because I am broke and don't have proper medical insurance so I can't get a blood test done.

I have all the early signs of being pregnant, like wanting yummy pickles and ice cream! Just remember, like I have to keep reminding myself, these tests we get over the counter some are early tests. The doctor's office is not Ept and First response are normally able to read it sooner, like up to five days sooner then a normal test. You just have to wait it out as maddening as it may be.

I've gone through this like three other times and when they've told me before that I wasn't, I would have a miscarriage, so don't do anything stupid if you think you are but are having mixed positive and negative results. --stanya

In april I took two home pregnancy tests and both came out positive. Then I went to the doctor for a pregnancy test which also came back positive. It's the middle of May and my last period was the end of March. Which means I'm seven weeks and one day pregnant. But I still don't think I'm pregnant. Is there a possibility I'm not pregnant?

need help. was suppose to get my period on may 8th. took two test on the 9th and they were both positive. went to doctors next day and both urine and blood test were negative. it is now the 13th. still no period and now all the pregnancy tests come out negative. What's going on? I'm not crazy. any help would be appreciated.

Last week I had three positive pregnancy tests and yesterday I had one positive test and one negative test. (clear blue pregnancy test) This morning my period came.

I went to the Gp and he told me not to think negative, that there is still a 90 percent chance that I could be pregnant. After feeling down, my Gp gave me hope. He also told me to do another urine test and blood test next week.

However, later in the afternoon I started to have back pains and stomach pains and more bleeding. I straight way said that I have miscarried. I then called my GP and he said to go straight to the hospital for a scan.

After four hours of waiting in the hospital, the doctor made me do a urine test and my result showed negative. He said that there could be three reasons for this cause: 1} is that I had false results 2} he had a false result 3) I had a miscarriage. I am confused and upset.

Can any relate to me? or give me some advice?

Anon77220: If by a "pound shop" you're talking about the American equivalent of a dollar store, then your friends are right. Spend the extra money to buy a quality pregnancy test, from a real pharmacy (or chemist in the UK). In fact, ask the chemist which one he/she recommends. It's worth a little extra cash.

anon77524

People, people, people! If you think you're knocked up, go to a doctor!

Come on, are you really so dumb to think, oh it said negative yesterday, but positive today, oh well. No, you go to a doctor.

i had sex two weeks ago. i took the morning after pill two days after. I'm due on my period in seven days but I've been having signs of being pregnant so i took a test from a pound shop. They both came out dark. Usually that means been pregnant for a while. I'm so scared but people have been saying don't buy a cheap test. i don't know what to do.

I found a pregnancy test in my house which was lost for like three months. My husband is deployed right now for almost three months too, so it just means I am nowhere to get pregnant.

I never had sex since my husband was deployed, but just for fun I used the pregnancy test I found this morning. It showed up very faint positive and very bright negative, but it's all red all over the test, between positive and negative.

I am sure I wasn't pregnant but I am worried now. I know this isn't normal, I might take another but I feel weird about buying one when I don't have any reasons to be pregnant.

anon75092

i took three test from the dollar store. two were a dollar and the other was like five. They were all positive. I am having morning sickness like crazy. On thursday i go to the health unit to take a test to see if i really am but i'm scared that they will say i'm not. What do you all think?

OK well I am about 2 1/2 weeks late on my period. Have taken three tests and all came out negative, then I took one today that came out positive. Freaking out, I took a different kind about 30 minutes later and it was negative again.

I have taken three different tests. I have been under stress and my blood pressure has been pretty high over the last couple of months. And I also have chronic renal failure. What is the likelihood that this is causing false or positive results? Someone please help. I am at a loss.

Don't forget guys that the tests say not to read them after a certain time, usually ten minutes if i recall correctly. A lot of times a faint positive shows up even if you're not pregnant. It happened to me, too.

Okay, so I have been on birth control for about a month now. Sometimes i would forget to take it so I would take a double dose or whatever the next time.

So, i had unprotected sex about two weeks ago and i missed my period when i was scheduled to have it. I am now showing signs of pregnancy and decided to take a pregnancy test. i took one and it showed up negative.

even fifteen minutes later, it stayed negative. i decided to take another one about two hours later and it showed up positive 10 minutes later. am i pregnant?

I had my tubes tied last april. I have had stomach pains since late January. I went to the emergency room and they said I had kidney stones. they did no xray and I missed my period for January. not sure so I went to ob/gyn and she ordered hcg testing to see if I am pregnant. this is just crazy.

I had a tubal ligation done 15 years ago. I went to the ER two days ago for severe stomach and lower back pain and was told by urine I was pregnant.

I made them test the blood and my Beta Hcg was 94 which is considered pregnant. Was told to repeat my Beta Hcg in 48 hours so I went today to get the test but my doctor left early so now i have to wait until Monday to find out if I am pregnant or not.

I did some research and found that after being fixed for 10-plus years your tubes can fuse/grow back together so pregnancy is possible.

I had a mishap and had to take plan b one morning. a week later I started what I thought was my period but i've been on it for two weeks now. it's not the shade that my period usually is, and two pregnancy tests are coming up positive.

I've been told I could have a cysts and also chemical pregnancy. Is it possible I'm not pregnant?

anon57216

I have read everyone's comments and I'm still confused. i have had a kid myself and during that pregnancy i tested negative but i was for sure pregnant no doubt. Now my wife (yes lesbian couple) and i are trying again to have a baby, this time with her being pregnant.

she pulled a positive test one morning and a false all in the same day also. She went to the doctor the same day they said it was negative. we want to believe it's just too early to tell because they did all the tests to see why it might have been positive, such as infections, yeast infections, UTI etc. Any ideas?

anon57215

About a year and a half ago, I passed out and just about had all pregnancy symptoms. Next day me and my hubby decided to take a test just to make sure and it came back positive! We were so unbelievably exited! So the next day came and we decided to take another and it was negative!

I was so confused then about a week later I started my period. It was devastating. The only thing I could think of was a chemical pregnancy. I've been trying for two and a half years with no success other than that positive test which ended up in me not even being pregnant.

anon57188

If you have taken home tests and they came up positive, and the tests from your doctor came up negative and they said they couldn't find anything in your uterus, but the home tests are still coming up positive, it's possible you may have a tubal pregnancy. In that case, i would recommend bringing it up to your doctor immediately. It happened to my mom.

As for the comment about the dark blood coming out, a lot of times your body will just release old blood before your actual period, so unless you are experiencing a lot of pain i would assume your body is just releasing the old.

anon56104

I was three weeks late, so I took a home test and it was negative. That same night I started bleeding. Two weeks later and I feel horrible nausea and vomiting, light headed, tired all the time. I took another home test and it was positive. Then I took another and it was negative. It is so confusing.

anon54882

My x took a home pregnancy test that showed positive. I got back with her for the kid's sake because I believe every child should have a parent. Later took two more different tests that showed positive also.

We went to the doctor who also said she indeed was pregnant. Well after a hand injury, she went to the doctor and while doing an x-ray and ultra sound, they found a tumor. So she's not pregnant.

I'm worried for her health but don't know how our relationship will work. Plus, I'm actually afraid I could catch something but it could just be my ignorance.

anon53995

i wasn't feeling too well one day and it was five days before my next period. my mom suggested that i take a pregnancy test and it came out positive. i then took two more digital pee tests and they said pregnant.

I had symptoms that go with pregnancy so i went to the doctor and got a blood test and it said i was pregnant.

Two days later i started spotting and then i started bleeding and i thought i was having a miscarriage. however, it was similar to my period. i was sent to the ER where they ran some hcg tests, just in case, at a different hospital only to find out that i was not pregnant. my hcg level was a ninw when a pregnant women in the first few weeks is anywhere from 45 to 300,000.

they said i was nowhere near to being pregnant.

why is it that i took different home pregnancy tests and they were all positive and a blood test at the doctor's office said positive and then a day later i get my period, it's not a miscarriage and it's declared that i never was pregnant?

the doctors were in shock and said i'm one in a million.

just thought people should know science isn't always right.

i took the morning after pill about 3 weeks ago and my period turned out to be late. but i began spotting on the day i should have started my period. being a week late i took the home test and it came out positive. but i have all the signs of getting my period. could i really be pregnant?

I missed my period, so my boyfriend suggested I take a pregnancy test. The test I took surprisingly came out positive. I then panicked and took another test, which also came out positive. Then we did some research and found out that in the morning you get the best result of the pee test. So I took a third in the morning the next day. It also came out positive. I then made a doctor's appointment and went in for an observation as well as a pee and blood test. The pee test in the doctor's office came out negative, and the doctor told me she couldn't see anything in my uterus, so I gave blood and am now waiting on the result. However, I came home and have taken twomore tests since the doctor's which both came out positive. Basically I have now taken five at home tests which were different brands which came out positive, but the one test taken at the doctor's is negative. I am so frustrated, we really want a baby. Do you think I am pregnant? Or could there be a chance the blood will come back negative also?

I always get positive results in pregnancy tests. i can never trust them. i have to go get a blood test every time i have a scare. i'm *never* ever late on my period and i'm a week and a half late. i took a test and it came out positive. i went to the doctor and got a blood test and theirs came out negative. never trust over the counter stuff.

Dude, if a guy tests positive on a home pregnancy test then he needs to see his doctor. Testicular cancer can cause a positive pregnancy test reading!

anon39456

false positives are more common than they think, i figure. i took 3 home pregnancy tests, EPT - and they all came up positive. i went to the doctor to have it confirmed, and they tested me 3 times, all negative. i came home and took another home test that came up negative. bottom line is, they can't be trusted. just go to the doctor.

anon38025

yea a pregnant woman can test negative. i tried being male i tested positive. whats up other than screwy tests likely contaminated through shipping

anon36781

i took a a couple of home tests after not geting my period for about 2 months and they read negative. now recently i have taken a another home test that read positive. after seeing my doctor i had an ultrasound and they could see nothing. i got nervous so i went home and took another home test and it came back negative. now does this mean i had a false positive or a miscarriage

anon35804

Can you get a false positive five months after giving birth?

wowwhattodo

I took a test about 4:30 today & it came up saying that in not pregnant, but I just looked at it again at about 10 and now it says I am.

Could it be a false positive?

anon29452

I am tired of all the wrong results! I am a guy and I am even more worried for my girl than she is for herself!

She keeps having side effects which seem like pregnancy to me. The other day, she had a negative, 2 days later on a different test, she had positive. A day or 2 later, she came up with 2 negatives. This is so confusing!

She says she is fine and that it probably was a false positive but I am insisting on a docs appointment!

Do you think she is negative? and I don't think she has a period bc she is on the monthly pill or something like that.

anon28920

Mizlopez90, it's possible that you may have had a miscarriage.

It's possible you took the test earlier than your late period. If you hadn't taken the test, you wouldn't have known anything was happening at all.

I have been off birth control for about 2 months now and I haven't had a period since January. I have taken 9 home pregnancy tests. Do you think I am pregnant or can stress or being on tetracycline make a difference?

mizlopez90

my period was about a week and a half late this month and I took a pregnancy test. it showed up positive. you can't misread this test it shows up *pregnant or not pregnant*. two days later I started bleeding heavily. I went to the doctor. he did a blood test and he said i wasn't pregnant ...i'm sooo confused!!!!!!!

anon26831

i did a home pregnancy test which came out positive. i also went to the doctor who confirmed same. about three months later i started spotting and the doctor sent me to do an ultrasound which confirmed that i have only an empty sac. is this possible and how can that be?

anon26041

i had 2 positive urine home pregnancy tests. the 2nd line in both came up almost immediately, but were quite light. now it seems as if i have started my period. i'm not to sure if i can still be pregnant or not.

Thanks for the article. It does help answer the question I posted 3 weeks ago, about false positive results. My case, however, ended up being a pregnancy. I found out at almost 6.5 weeks, but ended up losing it a week a half later.

i took a pregnancy test and it read negative. then yesterday (a week later) i took one and it read positive. we've been trying to get pregnant for a while and i'm worried about going to the doctor and having them tell me that i'm not preg. and that it was a false positive. i haven't had a period since september and it is now december but i was blaming that on the fact that i just recently stopped taking the birth control shot and that causes irregular periods. i have taken 3 or 4 tests since september and this is the first positive. i am not experiencing any symptoms other than cramping without bleeding which has been happening for almost 2 weeks. has anyone ever had a false positive or does anyone think i really am preg? i won't be able to go to the dr until friday and the suspense is killing me!! your advice and comments would be greatly appreciated

Help. I just took a test and came out positive. I had a heavy cycle 18 days ago, and 2 weeks later, thought I had a period but only lasted a day. I've had brown discharges for the last 3 days since. Have not been active since before cycle. Could this be that trophoblastic disease? I have kids, and have never had this happen. I don't think I'm pregnant, but can't figure out why this came out positive. Am waiting for the doc to call back.

Monday October 6th, I took a pregnancy test. It came out positive. I took three more to see if it was actually happening. So two days later I took another two and both came out negative. I'm completely confused. What could be going on?

anon19026

OK I've had 5 home pregnancy test come up positive and they were 3 different brands. i been to birth right twice and both of their test came up negative. the home test that i had were the kind that you pee on the stick. the kind of at birth right was the ones that you got to pee in a cup and then they use drops of it. what is the deal???

I have a friend who is pregnant and just had a blood test confirmed on 9/29 today she calls me and tells me her doctor is ordering a second blood test because a medicine she was on may have caused a false positive. The name of the medicine is Geodon Ex! Does anyone know because what I have found out so far the doc is pulling her leg.

anon16137: i would go with the most recent positive result on your pregnancy test. you may have taken the previously negative test too early, and your body didn't have high enough levels of hcG in your urine. once your body produced enough of it, the home pregnancy test was able to detect it. i would suggest taking another test, although false positives are pretty rare. also, make an appointment with your ob/gyn for confirmation and to begin prenatal care if you are pregnant.

anon16137

i took a pregnancy test and at the time it turned negative i went back some time later and it said positive so what do i go with?

anon12176

well i have irregular periods...skip a month here and there and the length of my period changes....so i wasn't really worried when my last period was in february...until i started to getting nausea around the end of march beginning of april...a took three pregnancy test and they all came out positive...is there a chance that they could be wrong...

anon11424

I thought I was pregnant for an entire day due to a false positive on a test at my doctor's office. However, they also drew blood and did a test which came out with zero presence HCG. I am still having all the signs, throwing up, sore, swollen breasts/erect, enlarged nipples. I have 3 children. I know what pregnant is like.

I just can't figure it out. I did not want to be pregnant until I found out I was, only to have it ripped away from me. They can give me no answers. Anyone else ever had this happen and still had a baby? They said the blood test they performed is conclusive but I honestly wonder if they got my blood mixed around with someone elses?

This is just awful. If I am not pregnant then these symptoms need to disappear. I would be about 4 weeks. They did an ultrasound the first day on the suspicion of it being a tubal but saw nothing. At 4 weeks you can't see anything uterine anyway.

I am just dumbfounded. Feel like I am literally losing my mind.

My last period was Feb. 24th, 2008, Then I was off the pill for a month, waiting for my appt to get a refill, I saw the Dr. on March 18th and also got the first shot of the Gardisil Vaccine. Could the Vaccine cause a false positive? and if I am pregnant do you know the risks of this vaccine, I have read horrible stories of miscarrying. Thank you

my wife got urine test positive on 2-02-08. Same day doctor was consulted. pregnyl 10000 dose was given. Endometrial thickness was 19mm on 13-02 08 and beta hcg on 15-02-08 was 1280 units. Despite all this ultrasound didn't show any activity. We are puzzled. Help.

slrosemead:

spotting in the first trimester of pregnancy is fairly common, and a lot of women go on to carry their babies to full term with no complications. with all three of my pregnancies, i had some light spotting around the time i should've had my period. you should be particularly concerned if the bleeding is heavy, bright red, and accompanied by cramping. call your doctor immediately to be checked out. good luck!

Yesterday afternoon my gynecologist doctor said I was pregnant after a positive urine test. However, today I started my period, what could be the matter?

anon7370

I went to the gynecologist yesterday for a pap smear. After taking a urine sample the doctor informed me that I was pregnant. Since I have had trouble conceiving I asked her to perform a blood test. Although she allowed the blood test she advised me to just accept the fact that I was indeed pregnant. The problem is that today I started my period. Do you think it is just a false positive or can a person have regular menstrual bleeding while pregnant??

anon2512

I suggest remaining calm and not causing any further distress by worrying. Yes, it is difficult to imagine, being anxious is a natural reaction to such indications. I simply suggest relaxing due to the fact that worrying about it isn't going to change anything.

Had some bleeding from somewhere not normal a year ago. Never got it checked out, it went away on its own. That was a year ago. Just this past january i had my period for 5 days- normal. Skipped 2 days then i started having severe pains and spotting for a week. I know i should have gone to a doctor then but i didn't have insurance so i didn't. Then it all stopped for a few days and about the 5th of february i got my period for 15 days in a row and haven't had it since then. 2 pregnancy tests show positive but i am afraid to tell anyone i know until my doc. appointment on the 29th because i think the abnormal bleeding i saw last year could mean a tumor like your article talked about. i do feel pregnancy symptoms but i am still doubtful. i have been trying for 6 years. if the doctor thinks i am 18 weeks along possibly, then why are they making me wait until june 29th to see a doctor?? advice?
