For many years, steel gutters have generally been the most popular choice among builders and homeowners. If you are thinking about adding gutters to your home, then here are some of the pros and cons of steel gutters that you should probably consider.p>

Steel gutters continue to be one of the most frequently used gutter systems for several different reasons. This type of gutter is relatively inexpensive, long lasting, and is usually easy to install and maintain.

On the positive side, steel gutters can be one of the least expensive guttering systems available. Generally, steel gutters are less than half the cost of gutters made of aluminum or vinyl. Several different types of coating materials are available to inhibit rust and add durability to these gutters. Adding a protective coating however will also add to the overall cost of steel guttering system.

Another advantage of this type of gutter is its durability. These gutters are typically manufactured with some form of zinc coating and have a reputation for holding up well in almost any environment. A steel gutter will often sustain less damage from falling debris than gutters made of other materials. In addition to these advantages, some manufacturers now offer environmentally friendly gutter systems that are made from recycled steel at no additional cost.

On the negative side, steel gutters can often sag over time due to loose connections with the house. When this occurs, appropriate repairs must be made to correct the problem before it becomes worse. If the gutters continue to sag, it is possible that your home may be damaged and the gutters themselves will need to be replaced. A careful inspection of the entire gutter system may be required periodically in order to avoid costly repairs.

Another disadvantage of using these gutters is the tendency for these gutters to rust over time. If you decide not to apply a rust-inhibiting coating material to the gutters prior to installation, the entire system will probably need to be replaced within five years, depending on the climate. Rust can be a particularly troublesome issue in areas that receive above average amounts of snow or rainfall. Applying a protective coating to steel gutters before installing them will usually save you time, effort and money in the future.

The process of installing steel gutters may prove to be a somewhat difficult task for many people. Although these gutters are lightweight, they typically offer very little flexibility during installation, which often makes the job quite time-consuming. If you have limited physical or mechanical ability, it might be wise to hire a professional to do the job for you.
