What are the Pros and Cons of Solar Garden Lights?

Solar-powered lighting is an increasingly popular choice for illuminating outdoor spaces. Solar garden lights are an environmentally sound investment for those concerned about renewable resources and, because they add nothing to the electric bill, they are inexpensive to operate. They are also easy to install and maintain; they do not need to be plugged in and the bulbs rarely need to be replaced. Despite these perks, solar outdoor lighting may be unappealing to some people because of their relatively high upfront cost. The light they emit is also not particularly bright or long-lasting, especially on cloudy days.

Solar garden lights use renewable energy rather than electricity, so they do not add to the cost of utility bills. This makes them attractive to homeowners looking to save a little money on their electricity bill while adding some light to their garden. Another money-saving benefit is the long life of the bulbs, which rarely need to be changed. This is because they use light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are long-lasting and low maintenance when compared to typical bulbs. Additionally, solar accent lights are easy to install, because they are staked into the ground separately, rather than connected to one another by a wire and plugged in.

While solar garden lights can be staked directly into the ground throughout the yard, they do need to be strategically placed to get plenty of sunlight for charging during the day. This means they cannot be staked in the shade, such as under large trees. If they are not in direct sunlight, they will barely hold a charge, resulting in a lack of light. In fact, even when placed in sunny areas, solar garden lights are not typically as bright as traditional electric lights. Their illuminating ability also does not last as many hours a day as electric lights, so they may not appeal to homeowners who want bright lights that can last well into the night.

Homeowners can expect to pay more upfront in exchange for lower utility bills and fewer light bulb replacements when using solar garden lights. The upfront cost means they are often considered an investment for which many have to save up. On the other hand, solar landscape lights can usually be purchased separately, allowing homeowners to outfit their garden with this type of accent lighting one or two lights at a time. This option keeps solar outdoor lights from being a financial burden for homeowners who are interested in renewable energy.
