There many parts in an electric vehicle motor, but there are a few primary ones that are found in nearly any electric motor. These are the components which allow the motor to work, and include the rotor, stator, transistors, axle, and a power source. Other parts are also included, but these are the main components that make an electric vehicle motor run.
The basic concept of an electric vehicle motor is simple. There needs to be a power source, something to maintain that power, and something to turn the wheel. In the case of a vehicle motor, batteries are the main power source.
All automobiles run partially on batteries, but a traditional gas fueled vehicle also runs primarily on a combustion engine. This can be pricey to keep fueled and may pose a hazard to the environment because gas operated vehicles emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Electric vehicle motors do not emit dangerous gases because instead of working in combination with gasoline, they implement several battery units.
The batteries used in a electric vehicle motor are generally rechargeable. They are used to power the rotor, a spinning device connected to several magnets. On the outside of the rotor, there is stator. This is a circular part that is covered in electromagnets. The magnets on the rotor and stator are situated to repel and attract the magnets in the adjoining part, thus keeping the rotor spinning.
As the batteries send power into the rotor, an electromagnetic field is created which both repels and attracts the magnets on the stator. Transistors may be used attached to a computer system to keep the magnets interchanging. This used to be handled manually with specialized brushes, but was replaced because brushes were noisy, causes sparks, often had to be replaced, and were not as efficient.
The motor is attached to four axles, which are then attached to the four wheels. Each axle is turned as the engine turns, thus allowing the car to move forward. Although electric vehicle motors may not allow for the same speed and travel distance as conventional gasoline motors, they are much cleaner and longer lasting. This is because no additional fuel source is needed, allowing parts within the engine to remain cleaner and avoid wear and tear. The electric vehicle motor also allows for more electronic parts, thus increasing efficiency.
There are electric cars which run on both the battery system and gasoline. These are known as hybrid vehicles, and they are more widely available worldwide than basic electric cars. In the future, as electric cars become more technologically advanced and convenient to use, they may fully replace the gasoline powered vehicle.
