Dextroamphetamine, which is a stimulant drug often used to treat medical conditions, may produce side effects such as heart palpitations, insomnia, and irritability. Other minor dextroamphetamine side effects include constipation and headache, and dry mouth. These can often be alleviated by modifying the dosage. In some cases, dextroamphetamine can cause developmental delays and serious allergic reactions.

Some individuals using dextroamphetamine for the first time may experience an allergic reaction. A dextroamphetamine allergy may be very serious, and symptoms include shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. Swelling and hives may also be dextroamphetamine side effects. Those who experience an allergic reaction to dextroamphetamine should seek medical assistance immediately.

When children are prescribed low dosage dextroamphetamine to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), some may experience minor side effects. Restlessness and irritability may be one of the common dextroamphetamine side effects in young children. These effects generally subside after a short period of adjustment, and do not necessitate any further action. If the child develops other symptoms, such as dizziness, nausea or vomiting, he may be given an alternative medication to treat his ADHD.

In addition, some children who take dextroamphetamine regularly are affected by stunted growth and developmental delays. Studies have been conducted that also warn of the dangers of visual disturbances in children and adults using this drug. Studies touting an increased risk of heart related problems among children using the drug are inconclusive.

Adults using this drug may experience dextroamphetamine side effects that disrupt the cardiovascular system. Tachycardia, which is an abnormally fast heartbeat, may occur from using this stimulant. In addition, dextroamphetamine may raise blood pressure in some individuals. Those who take beta blockers or blood pressure medication should not use dextroamphetamine, as it could interfere with the absorption of these drugs.

The central nervous system may also be affected by long-term use of this drug. Although not considered common, some patients have experienced motor tics, resembling that of individuals with Tourette's syndrome. Restless legs syndrome is another one of the dextroamphetamine side effects that may occur.

Male patients who are prescribed dextroamphetamine may experience erectile dysfunction, and experience a change in sex drive by taking dextroamphetamine. This temporary condition is generally resolved after discontinuing the drug.

Some individuals experience severe anxiety as a result of dextroamphetamine use. Increased nervousness or fear may be especially pronounced in older individuals. In some cases, psychotic behavior has been reported while using this drug, although these instances are uncommon. Hallucinations and paranoia are more common symptoms among patients who have a history of psychological problems.
