What Are the Different Types of Whole Grain Cereals?

Whole grain cereals have become more popular as people have become concerned about eating healthier food. Many of the whole grains that are used in cereal are familiar, including wheat, rice and oats, but there also are many less-well-known grains that offer a different taste in cereal. There are two main types of whole grain cereals — cold cereal and hot cereal — and either type can be made with virtually any type of grain or a mixture of grains.

The difference between whole grain cereals and other grain cereals is that they are not processed as much as regular grain cereals. Many people find that having whole grain cereal for breakfast is a quick and easy way to get more whole grains into their diet. One of the best places for consumers to find these cereals is at a food co-op or natural foods store. Many of them are available in the bulk food sections of these stores, which allows customers to mix their own blends of whole grain cereals by choosing grains from various bins.

Cold whole grain cereals can provide an ample serving of fiber and other nutrients that are contained in whole grains, and many people find them to be delicious. Many of them have added sweeteners, so although all of the ingredients might be natural, be aware that this adds calories. Along with common grains such as wheat and rice, some brands of cold cereals might be made with whole grains such as barley, buckwheat, rye and triticale. Most cold whole grain cereals include a blend of grains for added flavor and to ensure that they contain a wide variety of vitamins and nutrients.

There also are many hot whole grain cereals. These can be prepared in the microwave or on the stove, just like traditional hot cereal such as oatmeal. In addition to oats and wheat, grains such as millet, rye, barley can be used in hot cereals. Many whole grain cereals can be prepared hot or cold, depending on a person's personal preferences.
