What Are the Different Types of Part-Time Data Entry Jobs?

Part-time data entry jobs can be a great way to earn some additional income without the need for a great deal of education or experience. These are often available on a freelance or contract basis, though some people may be able to work for a company or organization as an on-site staff member. Many part-time data entry jobs give people the ability to work from home. The information entered can vary from consumer purchasing information or pricing of certain products, to medical billing codes or payroll. In many cases, the employees will not even be aware of what the data is really indicating; they will simply be provided the information and instructed to enter it into a form or database.

Generally, applicants for part-time data entry jobs are not required to have any education or experience beyond a high school diploma, and the ability to efficiently use a computer. Some experience with basic spreadsheet or database programs may be beneficial, but most companies are willing to train new hires on the specific software they use, and the job tasks they will be performing. People in this position must be willing to sit at a desk all day long, typically in a fairly standard office environment.

Some art-time data entry jobs, such as a hospital unit secretary, require direct contact with patients in order to collect information.

Though there are some staff positions available for part-time data entry jobs, many of them are offered on a freelance or contract basis, and some are even work-at-home positions. Individuals will receive a basic hourly wage for performing the data entry work, but will not be given health insurance, time off, or other benefits offered to staff employees. It is important for freelancers to do their research into any company offering freelance, work-at-home part-time data entry jobs, as this is a prime market for online scams. As a general rule, it should never require an application fee or any other type of fee in order to be eligible for a job; if it does, keep looking.

The specific data an individual must cover as part of his or her job will vary depending on the type of company or organization. Financial or pricing data, such as for a bank or a manufacturer, is fairly common. Insurance companies and medical billers will also frequently have part-time data entry jobs available since it just requires entering codes into certain forms. Most companies with a payroll department will also hire a data entry clerk to fill in weekly payroll amounts and benefit information for all employees. These are just a few of the most common examples, but there are hundreds of potential opportunities.

@browncoat - I've never had a good experience working as a temp through an agency. With the number of places you can find positions listed online, I'd rather just search for them myself. You get better flexibility that way and if you live in a big city, you won't have any lack of places to work.

@Ana1234 - That would have been a really lucky break, but you can essentially get the same experience by registering as a temp in order to get data entry work. The only problem is that you can't usually choose your own hours, no matter what they say. You'll generally end up working full time for short stints, rather than regular part time work.

After a big natural disaster near where I live, I saw that the Red Cross was asking on Facebook for people to volunteer to do some part time data entry to help them process the grants they were offering to help people survive away from their homes for a while.

I was just out of college and didn't have anything else to do right then, and I wanted to help, so I volunteered and was surprised on the first day when they explained that they were actually going to pay us for our time (and relatively well too).

I ended up working on a really interesting job (since we had to read the applications and I saw a lot of real stories I would never have otherwise seen) and got paid to help people, as well as getting a really nice recommendation letter at the end of it.

So, volunteering can be a good way to get your foot in the door somewhere. You probably won't get as lucky as I did, but every little bit helps.
