Information Technology (IT) is a type of engineering that deals with the way that data is stored, sent, and received among computers and telecommunication devices. IT courses vary, based on the different branches of IT studies. Some courses are designed for students who would like to pursue a degree or certification, while others are for those who are interested in gaining IT know-how. Finally, IT courses vary in terms of price and the method by which they are taken.

Information technology is a broad field, so these courses will focus on different areas of study. Students interested in programming languages tend to seek out classes that offer instruction in subjects such as C and C++. Other popular programming options are Python and Java.

Many in the IT career choose to focus mastering the workings of common Operating Systems (O.S.). IT programs that focus on O.S. may offer training in subjects such as UNIX™, LINUX™, and Windows™. Many of these courses are divided into subsections, such as application, Web programming, and Web development.

Another popular focus of many IT courses is network management and security. This branch of study involves the development, optimization, and security of Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). Networks that connect computers and devices within one location are LANs, whereas networks that connect components from different geographical locations are WANs. These courses train aspiring IT professionals to manage computer networks in corporations, businesses, institutions, and other organizations.

IT courses also differ in the level of certification that offered at completion. Students who attend a university many times take these courses in order to earn academic degrees, while other courses offer students certifications upon completion. Students who study IT as part of accredited university programs often have to satisfy a number of requirements not related to Information Technology in order to earn a degree. Certification, on the other hand, may be offered to students who have demonstrated proficiency in only the chosen IT coursework. IT certification programs may sometimes be offered in a university setting when an academic degree is not being offered.

Finally, IT courses vary in price and method. The most inexpensive courses tend to be those that are offered online. These range may range from costing no money at all to being slightly less expensive than courses that must be taken at certain locations. The most expensive courses are often those offered by colleges and universities and which end with academic degrees upon completion.
