Depending on a runner's skill level and the difficulty of the free running being attempted, a number of different types of free running gear are available. A good pair of shoes and flexible clothing are all that a runner needs in order to free run, but a range of protective gear can also be worn. It's a good idea to wear a mouth guard, especially when attempting flips and other acrobatic tricks. Many people may wear padding around the joints in case of a fall.

The proper footwear is the most important piece of free running gear that a participant needs. Any kind of athletic shoes can be worn for this sport as long as the tread on the bottom offers enough traction. All-terrain shoes may work well for many people, because free running can take place on a variety of different surfaces. Shoes that offer flexibility and support for the ankles are also optimal for use in free running.

The other main type of free running gear are the clothes worn while participating in the sport. Any comfortable clothing is acceptable, though many people chose to wear athletic apparel. Many of the materials that athletic clothing is made from absorb sweat quickly and keep the athlete cool, making it more comfortable to continue running for a long period of time. Other free runners choose to wear loose, comfortable clothing that speaks to his or her own style.

There are many different types of mouth guards available, but the best ones are made by dentists to fit an individual's mouth. The mouth guard protects a free runner's teeth, tongue, and gums from injury.

Free running gear can also include protective padding and helmets. These are especially important when a runner is attempting acrobatic moves over rough or hard terrain. Some of the most common padding is worn around the knees, wrists, and elbows and can prevent serious damage to these joints in the event of a fall. Helmets should be worn for flips while free running, so that the head is somewhat protected if the flip is not completed successfully.
