After purchasing an expensive kayak, it is important to learn how to store it properly. Proper kayak storage will give a kayak a longer life expectancy before it becomes damaged or begins to deteriorate. Kayaks should be stored inside somewhere safe, such as a garage or shed. Once placed inside, there are quite a few options for kayak storage depending on the needs of the individual.
A hoist works by placing the kayak in the container or bag, where it is then lifted into the air out of the way. Hoists can be hung from the ceiling of a garage or storage area from a beam or by being attached to the ceiling. This is a way to maximize storage space, as the kayak or kayaks are completely out of the way from the rest of the space. The hoist needs to be high enough that it clears obstacles such as cars or other items that are stored in the area. Hoists work by using pulley systems so that the kayak can easily be lifted out of the way regardless of the strength of the individual.
Wall hangers are attached to the wall of a storage space or garage. They are similar in appearance to racks and require that there is enough room in the space for the hanger to protrude from the wall. It is difficult to implement kayak storage if the wall hangers are located too high on the wall, so they must be low enough that the kayaks can be stored with ease. Kayak wall hangers come in various sizes and shapes depending on the room that the kayak is being stored in. This type of kayak storage system must be attached to a beam or a support structure in the wall so that they are sturdy when the kayak is placed on them.
Stands are placed on the ground and have a flat surface area with a slight dip where the kayak is placed. They are approximately waist-high so that the kayak can easily be lifted and placed into it. The stand keeps the kayak off the ground and away from potentially damaging substances. A stand requires more room than a wall hanger or a hoist due to the fact that it requires floor space instead of wall or ceiling space. Similar to a stand is a lift, which goes over other objects in a small space, and the kayak is placed on top.
