While many women experience cramping and pain during menstruation, others may also develop feelings of nausea. This condition can have a number of causes, including dysmenorrhea or endometriosis. In addition, nausea can be caused by changes in hormone levels or increases in pain. While over-the-counter medications may be effective for some women who suffer from nausea during their menstrual cycles, others may require prescription medications. Women who suffer from chronic nausea during their menstrual cycle, or who do not see relief through the methods described, may require additional medical attention.

Dysmenorrhea is a common cause of nausea during menstruation. While the root cause of the condition isn't fully understood, it is believed to be partially related to the release of naturally occurring hormones known as prostaglandins. The release of prostaglandins leads to uterine wall contractions, which can provoke nausea. Other symptoms of dysmenorrhea include vomiting, cramping, and severe headaches during menstruation.

Endometriosis is another common cause of nausea during menstruation. This condition occurs when endometrial implants are found around or on the ovaries, on the wall of the bowel, or on the fallopian tubes. Endometrial implants are composed of small pieces of endometrial tissue, which normally line the uterus. While the build-up, break-down, and shedding of endometrial tissue in the uterus is a normal part of menstruation, when it occurs outside of the uterus, severe feelings of nausea can develop. In addition to nausea, endometriosis can cause diarrhea, sharp pain in the rectum, abdominal cramping, and bloating. While medications may be effective in the treatment of the condition, more commonly surgery is required.

Nausea during menstruation can also be caused by the changes in hormones that occur naturally at this time of the month. These changes can result in an increase in the concentration of stomach digestive acids, leading to severe nausea. Women who have linked nausea during menstruation to changes in hormone levels may see some relief through the use of birth control pills. Injected estrogen may be a good choice for women who have difficulty using oral birth control medications.

Pain during menstruation can also lead to extreme nausea. In most cases, if pain associated with menstruation can be managed, nausea can also be significantly decreased. Patients are often encouraged to use over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen. Those who do not see results with the use of these products may be given prescription muscle relaxants. Drinking chamomile tea, using a hot pad, and engaging in light physical activity are other good methods for decreasing menstrual pain.
