Scar wax is a type of wax used to create fake wounds, marks, and scars on a person's body. It can be removed from a container with a small palette knife or popsicle stick. Some people work the wax until it is soft and pliable before applying it to the skin. Although this type of wax should stick to the skin for a short time, spirit gum can also be used to keep the wax stuck to the skin. After the scar wax is blended onto the skin, makeup can be used to make it appear more realistic.

Actors in theater and films sometimes need to alter their appearance. Fake scars and other marks can be made with scar wax, which is a thick putty-like wax. Some people may also be able to alter the appearance of certain facial features, such as their noses, with this substance.

A small palette knife is usually the best tool to scoop scar wax from a container. If this is not available, a similar item, such as a butter knife or a popsicle stick, can also be used. To prevent the sticky wax from adhering to the tool, a very small amount of mineral oil can be used to coat the end of it.

Scar wax can sometimes be difficult to work with, especially if it is too hard. Kneading the wax several times can help soften it, making it more pliable and easier to work with. This can be done with a palette knife or the fingers.

To begin creating a fake wound or scar, the newly worked chunk of scar wax can be shaped into the general shape of the blemish. For instance, if a person wanted to create a long, thin scar, he would roll the wax into a long rope. To create a circular wound, such as a puncture wound, the wax would first be rolled into a ball and then pressed into disc.

The scar wax can then be pressed onto the skin where the wound should be. To keep this type of skin prosthetic in place for long periods of time, a substance known as spirit gum can be used. A few drops of this adhesive should be enough to keep the scar wax glued to the skin for a few hours.

The edges of the scar wax should also be blended onto the skin as much as possible. This can be done by scraping the edges down and onto the skin. Flesh-colored makeup can also be used to cover the edges of the scar wax to create a more realistic look. Fake blood and other makeup can also be added.
