For baking cupcakes that are well formed, it's important to use the correct amount of cupcake batter. When baking cupcakes from scratch, using buttermilk in place of water may make cupcakes more moist. Another important tip to remember is to mix the batter to a smooth consistency. Additionally, all cupcakes should be matched evenly in size, so none of them will be over- or under-cooked.

Although sometimes overlooked, the utensils and bakeware used for baking cupcakes can be just as important as the ingredients. For this reason, refrain from using cheap cupcake tins. Cupcakes could fall apart or stick to the bottom of a poor quality pan. Line the cupcake pan with paper cupcake liners for easy non-stick removal. Some people prefer to use a non-stick coating spray to grease a cupcake pan.

Do not assume the cupcakes are thoroughly baked without testing them. To do so, insert a toothpick into the center of the cake. If the toothpick comes out perfectly clean when removed, the cupcakes should be ready to be taken from the oven. Cupcakes should be cooled completely before removing them from the pan. Wait at least 45 minutes before removing them and don't frost them until they have cooled.

Cupcakes do not have to be traditionally shaped. Try shopping at kitchen cookware specialty stores for silicone cupcake pans. These pans are often available in unusual shapes and designs, such as flowers or animal shapes. These pans can be fun to use for birthday parties and other events.

Various edible additions for decorating cupcakes may be purchased at the bulk food department of a supermarket. Chopped nuts, sesame sticks, pretzel pieces, and hard candies make nice decorations. Wait until the cupcakes have cooled before adding any additions.

Cupcake frosting is equally important when baking cupcakes. If the frosting is made from scratch, the mixture needs to be smooth in texture and not grainy. Spread the frosting with a spatula rather than using a knife, to reduce the risk of tearing the cake.

After baking cupcakes, they should be stored in an airtight container. Glass storage containers work well, too. It's a good idea to consume the cupcakes while they are very fresh, typically within a day.

Since cupcakes are so much smaller than other cake recipes, it is sometimes easy to bake them too long and even burn them.
