What are Kettlebells?

health wellness

Also known as a girya, the kettlebell is a traditional weight used in fitness and bodybuilding. First developed in Russia, kettlebells provide an advantage over many types of weightlifting equipment, in that the bells feature a handle that is composed of the same material as the main portion of the weight. In general, traditional kettlebells are one solid piece of metal, which makes them safe to use and easy to maintain.

Using kettlebells as part of a fitness routine is not unlike the use of any type of weights. Kettlebells can be used to develop and tone muscle for many parts of the body, especially the arms and upper torso. From this perspective, kettlebell lifting can be understood to provide the ideal workout for building strength in the upper body.

Along with building muscle, kettlebells can also be included in a workout for the cardiovascular system as well. This would involve systematic movements while holding the kettlebells, thus increasing the heart rate during the exercise period. The results of these sorts of activities will include a healthy heart, while also building up the level of good cholesterol in the body and lowering the presence of excess glucose and bad cholesterol.

Working out with kettlebells can also be a great way to increase agility and balance. Fitness instructors that are familiar with kettlebells can easily instruct interested people in a series of exercises and movements that can help the body to become limber, increase strength and endurance in the arms and legs, and in general enhance the grace with which the individual moves. These same exercises can prove helpful when the individual wishes to work on achieving a greater degree of balance.

Kettlebell usage has become popular in a number of countries around the world. Competitions are held in several countries, while many gyms in different countries will include kettlebells along with other weights as options for both the casual and serious bodybuilder. Simple in construction and easy to use, kettlebells are available in several different sizes, making it possible for even beginners to enjoy working with the weights.
