Studies show that driving without left turns usually saves both gas and time. Also, those who drive with fewer left turns in their route tend to have fewer accidents — up to 45 percent fewer, in fact.
More facts about driving without left turns:
- United Parcel Service (UPS) has GPS software specifically designed to help its drivers avoid left turns.
- Some cities are designing new streets called superstreets or "Michigan lefts" that combine a regular road with a U-turn to make right turns easier. Though effective at saving time and increasing safety, superstreets do take up more land than regular streets.
- Driving without lefts isn't always the best option, however. In traditionally designed road networks, making several right turns just to avoid one left can take more time.
