Should Left Turms be Eliminated?

Studies show that driving without left turns usually saves both gas and time. Also, those who drive with fewer left turns in their route tend to have fewer accidents — up to 45 percent fewer, in fact.

More facts about driving without left turns:

  • United Parcel Service (UPS) has GPS software specifically designed to help its drivers avoid left turns.

  • Some cities are designing new streets called superstreets or "Michigan lefts" that combine a regular road with a U-turn to make right turns easier. Though effective at saving time and increasing safety, superstreets do take up more land than regular streets.

  • Driving without lefts isn't always the best option, however. In traditionally designed road networks, making several right turns just to avoid one left can take more time.
