How Successful Are Online Dating Sites?

Statistics show that online dating sites appear to be successful – approximately 40 million single people use these sites, and according to a 2013 Pew Research Center survey on online dating and relationships, over two-thirds of site users have gone on at least one date with someone they met online.

One out of every five relationships are estimated to be as a result of online dating sites, as well as one out of every six marriages. In fact, Gary Kremen, the founder of Match.com, reported that he actually lost a girlfriend because she left him for a man she met on the site.

More about online dating:

  • 42% of women and 17% of men who use online dating sites reported having been harassed by other users.

  • Couples who met online have a lower divorce rate of 6%, versus an overall 8% for couples who met in person, according to a 2013 study of 20,000 marriages from 2005 to 2012, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

  • Men spend 50% more time looking at photos on dating sites compared to women; however, women spend 65% more time reading the profile information.
