How Much Energy in the US Is Generated from Renewable Sources?

About 11 percent of the United States' energy comes from renewable sources such as hydropower, wood, biofuels, wind energy and biomass waste. Solar energy production accounts for only about 1 percent of all renewable-source energy production in the U.S. Hydropower is the most prevalent form of renewable energy in the U.S., accounting for about 35 percent of all renewable energy production.

More facts about renewable energy:

  • Renewable-source-generated electricity is projected account for almost one-fifth of the United States' energy production by 2035.

  • The U.S. produces the second-most renewable-source electricity in the world, but it also consumes the most non-hydro renewable energy for producing electricity. China is the world's leading renewable-source electricity producer, followed by the U.S., Brazil and Canada.

  • The majority of renewable energy production goes toward making electricity, with electricity producers consuming more than 50 percent of the United States' renewable-source energy.
