How Many Units of Blood Are Required for a Liver Transplant?

On average, liver transplant requires approximately 10 units of blood to be replaced during and after the procedure. Heart surgery, including heart transplants, require two units of blood. Joint replacements require one unit, if any. One unit of blood is equal to 450 milliliters (one pint).

  • Adults have about 10 pints (4.75 liters) of blood, comprising about 7% of the average person's body weight. Newborn babies have about one cup (about 235 ml) of blood.

  • About 1 pint (450 ml) of blood is given in the average blood donation session.

  • Car accident victims can require 100 pints of blood.
