How Many Actresses Vied for the Role of Scarlett O'Hara?

After a nationwide casting call, 1,400 actresses were interviewed for the role of Scarlett O'Hara for the 1939 film Gone with the Wind. Of those, 400 were asked to do readings such as Lana Turner, Joan Bennett, and Susan Hayward. The role eventually went to the English actress, Vivien Leigh.

  • Leigh and Clark Gable were pictured on $0.25 US dollar (USD) commemorative postage stamps issued in 1990 as Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler.

  • Leigh received an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for her role as Scarlett O'Hara.

  • Hattie McDaniel, who played the role of Mammy, was the first African-American to win an Academy Award.
