Cherry juice for gout is one of the most studied home remedies for this debilitating disease. There is no cure for gout, which is a form of arthritis, but studies have found cherry juice to be effective in relieving gout symptoms. A flareup of the disease occurs when uric acid crystals build up in joints — commonly the big toe but possibly any joint of the body. Cherries and other dark berries have been found to contain chemicals that lower uric acid levels and reduce inflammation and thus can help relieve symptoms of gout.

Cherry juice for gout is available in grocery stores and can be found in extract and supplement forms. Other than cherry juice for gout, foods that have been effective in relieving gout symptoms include celery, which also has been used for centuries to relieve symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. Home remedies for gout should not be used to replace approved medicines for the disease.

It is recommended that persons suffering from a gout attack try bromelain, an enzyme contained in pineapple that has been found to be an effective anti-inflammatory. Turmeric or curcumin has been found to be effective in pain relief because it acts much like aspirin or ibuprofen in inhibiting the body's synthesis of chemicals that are involved in pain. In high doses, curcumin stimulates the body's release of cortisone, which is a powerful reliever of inflammation and the pain that swelling causes.

Along with cherry juice for gout, patients also are encouraged to use substances that promote a healthy acid level in the body, because gout is caused by high uric acid levels. During a gout flareup, it is recommended that sufferers avoid all foods that are extremely acid-forming, such as artificial sweeteners, carbonated soft drinks, cigarettes, white wheat flour, goat, lamb, pork, sugar, beer, venison, chocolate, tea, turkey, white rice and vinegar.

Gout sufferers should use a diet that is low in protein and high in complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Also recommended are fish — but not other seafood — as well as tofu, lean meats and poultry. No more than 30 percent of daily calories should come from fat. No more than 10 percent of that fat intake should be from animal fats.

I can't drink the cherry juice. It gives me terrible gas. I talked with my trainer and she recommended the tart cherry capsules from Fruit Advantage. She said it was the sorbitol in the cherry juice that was causing the gas.
