How do Steaks Served in Restaurants Compare with Recommended Portion Sizes?

The average size of a steak in a restaurant is 14 ounces (400 grams). The recommended serving size of meat is 3 ounces (85 grams) — the average restaurant steak is more than four times larger. 60 percent of chefs in the United States say they serve steaks that are 12 ounces (340 grams) or larger.

  • Restaurant meals typically contain 60 percent more calories than meals cooked in mom's or dad's kitchen.

  • Each American eats out, on average, about 209 times per year. This includes dining in restaurants and getting take out.

  • In a survey of chefs and diners, 86 percent of the chefs said diners would notice if they reduced portion sizes by 25 percent; 60 percent of diners said they wouldn't.
