There are few ways to permanently stop facial hair growth, but it is possible to slow the return of visible growth, reduce the hair overall, and, if you have a certain medical condition, stop facial hair growth altogether. Waxing, laser hair removal, and electrolysis are all types of hair removal that can be used on the face with long-term results. Laser hair removal and electrolysis can reduce or eventually stop facial hair growth altogether, but additional treatment sessions are sometimes needed after a few years. Lastly, sometimes facial hair growth is the result of a hormonal imbalance or health condition, which can be solved by visiting a doctor, getting a checkup, and assessing your options.

Waxing is a hair removal method that uses hot or hard wax and cloth strips to rip your hair out from the roots. This is usually quite painful, but it can take weeks for your facial hair growth to return. The downsides are cost, pain, and temporary redness and possibly itchiness at the waxing site.

Contrary to popular belief and some advertisements, laser hair removal is not a permanent solution to unwanted hair. It can stop the growth for a while, but eventually the hair will begin to grow again. This method of hair removal is more accurately described as a permanent hair reduction method, because even though some of the hair grows back, there is less of it than before. Stopping facial hair growth with this method is typically less expensive than stopping the growth on your legs, back, or underarms because the area is relatively small. You will most likely need multiple sessions to temporarily stop all facial hair.

Electrology is often regarded as the only way to completely destroy the cells that cause hair growth. A potential drawback is that it can take up to four years to totally stop facial hair growth. These sessions are often as expensive or more expensive than laser and waxing sessions.

Lastly, sometimes facial hair growth is a sign of another problem, not the problem itself. Imbalanced hormones or certain health conditions can increase your facial hair growth. In this case, it is advisable to see a doctor to assess the situation and find out what is going on with your body; the cure may be something relatively simple and not as costly as regular hair removal sessions. Some women find relief in taking a hormone birth control pill that balances out their hormones, potentially leading to less facial hair and less acne.

@anamur-- Have you tried hair removal creams?

I like these better than waxing, it's easy and there is no pain. It takes my facial hair a good month to come back after using a hair removal cream.

I think that there are also hair removing creams that remove hair permanently. But it might require a prescription, I'm not sure. You might want to do some research on that.

@anamur-- First of all, if you have a lot of facial hair or if it's growing out very quickly, you should see your doctor. A hormone imbalance might be the cause. You can remove hair all you want, but unless your hormones are back to normal, it will just keep growing back.

Of course, not everyone who has facial hair has a hormone imbalance. Often times, it's genetic.

You might want to try laser treatment or electrolysis. I know it's kind of costly but if you don't want to be shaving and waxing, they're great options.

I get some facial hair above my lip and I use hot wax to remove it but it grows back in just a week.
