An enema is a device typically used for constipation relief. While disposable enemas are popular in many regions of the world, it can sometimes be expensive to buy one each time you need it if you suffer from chronic constipation. A homemade enema can be made using a simple solution and the proper container. In many cases, a homemade enema is just as effective as and less expensive than a store-bought enema.

Enemas come in many containers, from bags to bottles to steel cans. For a homemade enema, it is typically recommended that the container either be a clear plastic bag or a clear plastic bottle you can squeeze. Clear containers make it easier to see the level of fluid in them, which may make the process of administering the enema easier. Enema containers generally have either tubing or extended applicators on the end for administering.

To make an enema solution, the main ingredient to use is clean, filtered water. To this you may add one to two drops of liquid mild soap, one to two teaspoons (about 5 to 10 ml) of Epsom or non-iodized salt and even a few tablespoons of mineral oil. Alternatively, enema soap solution is available pre-made in many regions.

When administering the solution from a bag, it is helpful to have something to hang the bag from. Typically, the best height from which to hang the enema is 18 to 24 inches (about 46 to 61 cm) above the rectum. This can be accomplished in many ways, such as having someone assist you or attaching something to the wall, or a stand may be available in your local medical supply store.

Lastly, some form of lubricant is typically recommended to apply to the tip of the rectal applicator. Any water-based product is generally used as lubricant. It is best to be sure the container and all parts of the enema are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before each use.

Drinking eight to 16 ounces (250 to 500 mL) of water prior to beginning the enema is usually recommended, as it may help soften the stool. When mixing the solution, the water may be heated to 100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (37 to 40 degrees Celsius) prior to mixing anything into it. This will make the solution slightly warmer than the normal internal temperature, which may make the enema more comfortable. If you are administering a homemade enema for the first time, it is normally recommended that you contact a health care provider for tips. They may also be able to advise on whether you have a bowel problem, which may be complicated by the use of a homemade enema.

I don't think I'd want to use an enema which caused bad cramps. That's usually your body's way of saying something is wrong.

After researching the milk enema, it sounds pretty effective, but you would definitely want to follow up with an internal cleansing.

There is also a lemon juice enema that it very effective for cleansing of the colon. You use ½ cup lemon juice per quart of water. The only problem with this one is that it is said that the cramps may be pretty bad.

@calabama71: My mother has actually used the milk enema. I’m not sure of the success of it, but she mixes 1 ½ quarts of warm water with 16 oz. warm milk and 1 Tbsp. olive oil. You can heat the milk in the microwave and then pour all of the ingredients in the enema bag. You can also add a Tbsp. of honey.

I know that this sounds odd, but my cousin's son was recently in the hospital with stomach problems. She said that they gave him an enema made of milk. I had never heard of such but she said it worked better than anything that she had ever seen.
