When attempting to improve concentration, it seems to be important that an individual use techniques that engage both the mind and body. Research suggests that meditation, which relaxes the mind and body, is important for decreasing brainwave rates which are essential for concentration. It is also recommended that an individual increase physical exercise, as this has been shown to increase cognitive abilities and improve the ability to concentrate on a single subject at any give time. A proper diet, with the right nutrients, has also been suggested to help with concentration, yet this alone has not been proven to help with concentration abilities.

Concentration may rely on a number of internal and external factors, such as brainwave patterns and the interactions with television and computer games. There is research to suggest that individuals who regularly participate in some type of meditation have better memory and can concentrate more fully than non-meditators. Deep breathing and relaxation through meditation is said to help with concentration by slowing brainwaves and increasing the thickness of certain brain regions. Even light meditation has shown to have an affect on improving concentration in most individuals.

It is also suggested that those who want to improve concentration, whether for school or work, create a physical exercise program focusing on aerobic exercise. The increased blood flow and oxygen to the brain is said to help with concentration improvement, as well as increasing cognitive abilities. Exercise supposedly helps the mind relax and focus on a single subject or idea at any given time, making it a possible natural alternative for concentration-enhancing drugs. This area requires more research, however, as exercise alone may not be helpful in extreme cases of ADD or ADHD in children and adults.

A proper diet, with the correct nutrients, has been shown to be helpful in proper brain functioning and even in improving concentration. Of these nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids seem to show the most promise in boosting brain health and aiding concentration in most individuals. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids include fish and fish oils, yet these fats can also be found in plant sources such as walnuts and flaxseeds. Vitamin E, which is found in nuts and seeds, also plays an important role as an antioxidant to help keep the brain sharp and avoid cognitive decline throughout the years.
