How Do I Get a Mechanic Certification?

manufacturing industry

A mechanic certification reassures consumers that the mechanic working on their vehicles knows what he or she is doing. It is one thing to know how to work on cars, trucks or other vehicles, but when that knowledge is backed by a certification, then quality of work is almost insured. In the United States, the most popular certifying entity for mechanics is the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

The institute is a non-profit organization that is widely respected and recognized as a governing body for certifying mechanics. The phrase "ASE certified" is a general term for not just auto mechanic certification, but many different mechanic certifications for a variety of vehicles and vehicle parts. In all, the organization offers more than 40 exams for mechanic certification.

Each exam offered by the institute is very challenging and extensive. Different types of vehicles have different exams. The applicant must have a minimum of two years or relevant work experience and be able to provide proof of that experience in addition to passing the exam in order to obtain ASE mechanic certification. The certifications must be renewed every five years, and this process involves being retested. This helps to insure the quality of the mechanics that hold the ASE certifications, many of whom wear the ASE logo.

Many technical schools, vocational schools, and community colleges offer mechanic certification programs. Students can get hands-on training as well as classroom work, learning the skills that they need to get their mechanic certificate. Students can focus on specific areas such as heating and cooling, basic engine management, drivetrain systems, or transmission if they wish to specialize in one particular area. It is important to note that auto mechanics is not the only certification program available. Other areas of coursework include motorcycle, semi truck, and trucking mechanics.

Some car dealers and automakers sponsor training programs for mechanical certification. Typically these are a specialized two-year course of study geared toward individuals who want to work on a specific make of car or truck. Some motorcycle manufacturers do this as well to ensure that they have quality mechanics servicing their products. If you are interested in working on a certain make of vehicle, check with the manufacturer and local dealers to see how you can get into the mechanic certification program for their company.

Getting your mechanic certification does require some work, but it can be well worth it. Once you are certified, you will have greater leverage in finding a job at a reputable garage. You will also be able to display your certification and the organization logo, letting your customers know that their vehicle is in good hands with you. The key to getting your certification is finding the program that best fits you. Once you find it, work hard and then make that certification work for you.
