Acidophilus is a friendly bacteria found in many cultured foods, such as yogurt and kefir, and provides many functions in the human body, such as easing digestion and improving the immune system. Most people who are lactose intolerant cannot handle such foods, but still seek to supply their body with this friendly bacteria by searching for milk-free acidophilus products. Most milk-free acidophilus products are dairy-free yogurts and milks, as well as simple dietary supplements containing acidophilus. Lactose-free yogurts can be made from coconut milk or almond milk, and some milk products contain real milk with lactase, an enzyme that helps break down lactose, added to the mixture.

Natural acidophilus is a bacteria found in cultured foods such as yogurt, and provides health benefits to the body such as improving the digestive system. As this bacteria lines the intestines, it helps break down food substances and destroy negative bacteria that may prevent bad digestion. Studies have also shown that acidophilus improves the immune system and helps prevent colds and illnesses caused by invading bacteria. Most milk-free acidophilus products have acidophilus and other friendly bacteria added to them, yet the health benefits are just as effective as naturally found bacteria.

Instead, these products are made from dairy-free milks that are less allergenic and are easy to digest.

Dairy-free yogurts and kefir, a yogurt drink, can be made from various nut milks such as almond and coconut, and almost all contain milk-free acidophilus bacteria. It is best to choose a milk-free acidophilus product that doesn't contain added sugar, as this can negate the health benefits from the actual bacteria. Another milk-free acidophilus supplement that is easy to use and doesn't contain any calories are acidophilus supplements, which are usually available in capsule form. Most acidophilus supplements need to be kept in cool temperatures, as warm environments seem to decrease the available bacteria counts.
