If you are in the market for a light wheelchair, there are a few factors to consider before buying. One of the most popular types of wheelchairs that are lightweight is the rigid kind, as it is durable yet unencumbered by the hardware that is usually necessary on the typical folding chair. If your goal is to have the lightest chair on the market and you have some extra money to spend, a titanium wheelchair may work best for you. If, on the other hand, your goal is portability, you should consider finding a lightweight foldable wheelchair.

You will likely notice a large selection of rigid wheelchairs when you look for a lightweight chair, as these are the most popular types. Rigid chairs often start at about 14 pounds (6.35 kg), and most are suitable for everyday use. Though they are lightweight, they usually still include the basics, such as armrests that can fold up, as well as adjustable backrests and seat heights. Thus, this kind of light wheelchair is often considered both lightweight and comfortable.

If you are determined to get the lightest chair on the market, the titanium kind may appeal to you, as this material is known for being particularly lightweight. In fact, most titanium chairs start at about 10 pounds (4.54 kg), despite being known as one of the most durable chairs available. This type also typically boasts superior shock-absorption, and comes in either rigid or folding styles. Of course, you can expect to pay extra for this kind of light wheelchair, though if you want to get around quickly in a durable chair that is easy to travel with, the cost may be worth it to you.

Portability is a necessity for some people, so having a foldable light wheelchair that fits easily into a car can be important. If you want a folding wheelchair that is also light enough to lift into a car and small enough to store nearly anywhere, you should look for a lightweight style that happens to fold. Foldable chairs usually feature the same benefits as rigid chairs, including leg rests that easily swing away, but they are just easier to transport. The only downside is that they are often not as light as the rigid wheelchair designs, because the folding mechanism may add some weight. This type of light wheelchair usually starts at about 18 pounds (8.16 kg), though the majority are closer 25 pounds (11.34 kg).

Foldable wheelchairs are often not more compact to transport. The foldable footrests make them clumsy and big, and because they are mostly very adjustable, they are heavy and have a lot of movement in the frame.

Titanium isn't your only option. Take a look at the Quickie Xenon, a folding wheelchair with the starting weight of approx. 8.4 kg.
