How Do I Choose the Best Brick Cleaner?

Thoroughly cleaning a brick surface can help keep it looking fresh and new. Good brick maintenance not only ensures aesthetic appeal but also increases the life of the material. Finding a good brick cleaner is not difficult and you can even make your own formulas at home. Homemade brick cleaner will work but there are many commercial brick cleaners available as well if you would rather just grab a couple different formulas to try them out.

A brick surface can look very old if it isn’t cleaned and maintained properly. Most home and business owners want their properties to look not only well-kept but also inviting. Making the exterior look welcoming is especially important if you attempting to sell your home or business. A bit of time and effort can make your place look as good as new, and a good brick cleaner can make that job easier.

It is a good idea to test a number of different cleaners in small, out-of-the-way areas before treating the entire surface. Don’t be afraid to ask for samples or to purchase a couple small containers to try out before tackling the entire job. Comparing different types and brands of brick cleaner to see how they work on your particular surface is generally the most effective way to choose the best one. It may take a bit more time, effort, and perhaps money, to go this route, but your brick surface will be better for it in the long run.

The type, style, color, age, and condition of the brick are also important factors. Brick that is very old or prone to crumbling may require milder formulas. Read the package to identify the ingredients and to learn is ventilation will be required for use. Natural cleaning products may contain vinegar or other mild ingredients while other cleaners can contain harsher chemicals.

Some types of brick cleaner may need to sit on the surface for a bit before you begin scrubbing. Others may work immediately. It is wise to follow the directions carefully in order to achieve the best results.

Stronger formulas may need to be diluted if they are heavily concentrated. A concentrated formula does have advantages since you can only use as much product as you need for a specific job. For lighter jobs, dilute the solution to a greater degree, which will allow you to use less brick cleaner.

No matter what kind of brick cleaner you choose, using it along with a power washer will give you the best results when washing your brick surfaces.

I have a brick porch, and I have found that the best cleaner to use is basic dish washing detergent. It is gentle enough not to damage the finish of the bricks, yet is strong enough to remove dirt and grime that makes them look dull.

To clean your brick surfaces with dish detergent, you can mix a small amount into a bucket of water and wash them down with a sponge. Follow up by rinsing off the soapy cleaner.

For smaller areas, mixing dish detergent and water is a spray bottle, applying it, then rinsing will work very well.
