The Navy reserve is an important component of any military defense structure. It is not comprised of full-time sailors, so a Naval reserve's members must be prepared to serve their country on short notice. If you want to help staff the military reserve, you can become a Navy reserve recruiter. This job requires you to be an expert on the military, a salesman and a model sailor. To become a Navy reserve recruiter, you will need at least a high school diploma, though a bachelor's degree is preferred in many cases. No matter your educational background, you will be able to prepare for this job by working hard in school. Knowing about history is important to understanding the Navy's role in your country. Strong written and oral language skills are important, as are being physically fit and taking physical education seriously.
Your biggest job, when you become a Navy reserve recruiter, will be to provide information. Your primary duty will be to meet with prospective reserve members and tell them all about jobs in the Navy. This requires a firm understanding of the Naval reserve and the hundreds of different jobs that can be filled. You will have to be able to read people well, not only to determine what type of job might appeal to recruits but also to ensure that the recruits have the qualities that the reserve needs.
Another important aspect of this job is explaining the service requirements of this military branch. If you want to become a Navy reserve recruiter, you must clearly outline the Navy's time expectations of a recruit, which generally are a few days a month for training; the recruit spends the rest of the time as a civilian. It is important to explain that during times of crisis, such as a war, Naval reserve duty can become a full-time job.
You must be willing to travel if you become a Navy reserve recruiter. There is a very strong possibility that you will be relocated to an area that needs a recruiter. In addition, you will have to travel within a specific region, meeting with prospective recruits in schools, at job fairs and in other places.
