A millwright is a person who constructs and maintains machinery, usually in a construction setting. The process of becoming such a tradesman starts when you become a millwright apprentice. Before you can apply for such a position, however, you will need to do a bit of research into the position to ensure you are prepared. You may also need to complete a high school education, though this is not always necessary in all regions. In many parts of the world, you will need to apply for an apprenticeship with the millwright union.

Be prepared for rejection if you want to be a millwright apprentice. The positions are usually limited, and many candidates are likely to apply for the apprenticeship. If you do not secure a position at first, be patient and try again when another apprenticeship becomes available. You can increase your chances to become a millwright apprentice by working in the construction industry in any capacity, and by completing a high school education. Any experience you can gain that will showcase your skills and work ethic will improve your chances to become a millwright apprentice.

Sometimes you can apply for a position with a specific company rather than with a local union, especially if such a union does not exist in your area. Look into job postings from local construction companies, factories, and other industrial companies who may be offering apprenticeship positions. If none are available, it may be a good idea to take another position within the company; being a current employee of a company improves your chances to become a millwright apprentice, especially if you perform well at any job you do within that company. Entry-level positions are good opportunities for you to show managers that you can work hard, learn new skills, and take on complex tasks when assigned.

Once you become a millwright apprentice, you will be considered an apprentice for an extended period of time while you learn the skills on the job. Your pay level is likely to be lower than that of a professional millwright, and you will probably be an apprentice for two to five years, but once you complete the apprenticeship, you will be a fully certified millwright prepared to work in professional settings on your own. Your pay will increase, and you may be offered a benefits package as well; sometimes apprentices are also offered benefits, but this can vary by region.
