Someone who wants to become a communications consultant needs to have experience in corporate communications, executive communications support, event management, media relations and crisis management. Some formal education will also likely be required by an organization that is looking to hire a communications consultant.

Communications consultants provide verbal or written direction and recommendations for implementing communication strategies that support the business or its particular endeavors. Consultants in this field typically provide advice or recommendations regarding communications issues and customized communications plans and materials. A communications consultant needs to know all of the people involved in a company or organization, not just the key people and executives. Good communications consultants never assume anything but might obtain information through the use of discussion or focus groups, one-on-one interviews, telephone surveys or by just talking to employees within a company when needed.

Becoming a communications consultant may be challenging because this job requires a lot of self-initiative. Often times, a business will know what goal they want to achieve in terms of communications but won't know how to get there. And they hire a communications consultant to figure out the exact process and steps.

So a communications consultant needs to have a complete understanding of the industry and the various communication methods in order to fulfill what is expected of him or her.

@bluedolphin-- I'm not an expert but as far as I know, communication consultants only work on external communications. They mostly deal with "branding," where the communications consultant helps develop ways to portray the company's identity or "brand" most accurately to the public.

Almost always though, companies have a specific communications or media project in mind and will hire a communications consultant to carry out the project.

Of course, what a communications consultant does at a company also depends on the company's needs and what exactly they are looking for. So the specific tasks may vary slightly from company to company.

Do communication consultants only advise a company about external communication to the public and other businesses? Or do they also advise companies about internal communications?
