Education past high school is not compulsory but can be helpful if you want to become a chemist technician. Some jobs will accept high school graduates who have good grades in science and mathematics and provide them with on-the-job training, while others will require at least two years' study at a college or technical school. In order to find a job in this field, it helps to have some hands-on experience, too.

You should get good grades in mathematics, science, and English while you are in high school. Afterwards, there are schools that may offer specific courses to help you become a chemist technician. These courses can be taken on campus or via distance study and are not compulsory but will help a great deal when it comes to finding a job. These schools usually offer certificates, diplomas, and associate’s degrees. Associate’s degrees are also sometimes given at the end of on-the-job training courses.

If you have taken a course in chemistry in college or another technical institute, you may be able to get valuable help from a placement office. You should also consider looking at your state employment service or union office, which may be able to help you find a job. You may be able to find a company that can offer an apprenticeship to help you become a chemist technician.

Hands-on experience is also an asset when looking for a position as a chemist technician. Look around on networking websites, speak to people in the industry, and find a way to get a foot in the door. Another helpful tip is to look at local classified advertisements to get a good idea of the qualifications and experience potential employers are looking for.

Landing the job is not necessarily the final step to become a chemist technician. Chemist technicians that willingly accept responsibility and display a strong work ethic, without the need for supervision, will often be promoted to more senior positions. The job of a chemist technician is often considered a stepping stone to becoming a chemist, and this is why the requirements are fewer.
